vegas help

hi,
i am trying to play/edit a video clip in vegas that i shot with my digital camera. the file type is .avi. when i bring this file into vegas it will play the audio but not the video. i have tried to use the "properties" to set the template but the drop-down menu does not have avi as a choice. i also tried the tab which is called "match type" or something like that but with no success. i am a vegas newbie...any ideas?

Actually, your file is not really an .avi (which IS a format supported by Vegas). It's more likey a motion-JPEG, which Vegas cannot import. I did the same thing - I shot some video clips with my Canon Powershot S200 and then wanted to play with them in Vegas, then discovered what you did. My solution? I upgraded my QuickTime to QuickTime Pro and converted the so-called .avi files from my camera into QuickTime movies. I was then able to import the video into Vegas and have fun. If you go this route, make sure to do a custom install of QuickTime Pro, because that's where you get to enable the QT authoring component. Good luck!

hello again,
i ended up talking to a friend who ran one of my video clips through his video file converter (i think it was "easy video converter"). we converted from the camera-type of avi to another format avi with DIVX codec. i am not even sure what that means...my issue now is that the converted file is somehow compressed so that the quality had gone way down. i think the file size dropped from 90mb to 24mb. is there a way to convert this file into a vegas-readable format without losing quality?

ps- i don't use Quicktime Mad Audio....is that a Mac program? i am pc

QuickTime was written by Apple, but they have a PC version (which is the one I used since I'm a PC user, too. Can't run Vegas on a Mac!). I'm surprised you haven't seen it before. Lots of websites use it. But anyway, you can get the regular version for free at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
To do the conversion, though, you'd need to upgrade to the Pro version, which is really cheap. I think it's like $30.

Use a good vedio capture card like premere or pinacale.
