I just received the book "Using Your Portable Studio" by Peter McIan, through the mail. It only took four days from the time I ordered it till I received it. Anyway, I just spent maybe 15 minutes looking through it and already my knowledge base increased by at least 10 percent. I am looking forward to studying this tome in detail.

Have any of you read this book and found it helpful? Give me your thoughts good or bad, if you have any. It is interesting to note that the unit pictured on the cover the book is a TASCAM 488 MKII.

It's a good book & very thorough. This book and others by Peter McIan are kind of old school and pre DAW. Great for hands on analog.

I've had this book for a couple years now and I think it's great.
Im always refering to it.
 
I just ordered it. Been wanting to play around with my 424 Mk II lately.
 
Yeah this book and his other one, Musicians Guide to Home Recording, are always in my bedside table, and I flip through them often. When I'm tracking, I'll usually take them with me for reference. There's actually a lot of common information between the two books, but the Musicians Guide focuses a lot on reel to reels and the workings/maintenance of them, etc. But much of the information regarding recording/EQing/processing instruments is similar.

In short, they're great books, and they're some of my staples.
 
I have been using it for a couple years - It vastly improved my recordings and understanding- I recommend it for any newbie.
I always find myself gong back to it and it almost always answers my questions. - McIan sure did home studio-phials a service on this one
 
I've had both since the early 00s (possibly the late 90s. Not sure). I've reread them both recently with the aim of using some of his recommendations and recipes on the forthcoming recording sessions for my band.

My copy of TMGTHR is nearly falling apart :( :)

By the way. Originally How To Use Your Portable Studio came with a series of cassettes? If it's still in print did they ever release those on CD?

I got a used copy through Amazon and it did not come with anything but the book. The cassettes would have been interesting to listen to.
 
As far as I know, it never came with cassettes. It had an offer listed in the front of the book where you could order them. At least, that's what my book says. I tried writing to the address it gave years ago, asking if CDs were available (or even if the cassettes still were), and I never heard back.
 
I ordered the book through Barnes & Noble and it did not come with any cassettes.
