A1A2 - i've had the most succes when i take a cd that has proven to be succesfully mixed and mastered and open it up in my recording/mixing/mastering software and analyze the tracks. if you have the patience, do it to every song on the cd, what you will notice, generally speaking, is that all the songs will have relatively the same frequency responses. this is done to create an equilibrium in the cd, makes it more appealing to listen to with the least amount of fatigueness. after analyzing the cd, do more than one and do the ones you want to get your sound similar to, analyze your own tracks and notice the differences. but overall, you should really hone in on your ears...using visual tools to get the sound right is contradictory by nature, but it can be helpful, always get it right with your ears first, then double and triple check with your eyes, when you know how to use them.
hope it helped a little.
