Using outboard FX with Yamaha AW16G

I'm currently recording songs on my Yamaha AW16G and I've run into a problem.
I'm trying to route already recorded tracks through a Joe Meek VC3Q to add compression. In theory I know I should route the track in question out of the desk, through the JM & back into the input on a new track.
I'm not looking to add compression on a mix at the moment, but just on individual tracks - and then replace the uncompressed track with the new one.
Any help would be appreciated - thanks.

Why don't you just use the compression built in to your Yam 16?

The more your send the signal the more it is affected or infected or rejected.

I can't argue your point. Some of the stuff on the Yam recorders isn't very good.

The reverb on my 2816 is excellent. I have two outboard reverb units that sit and watch when I record.

I really don't mess with compression, etc. I don't really do much with the EQ on my unit, but it isn't that bad. The 2816 is similar to your unit but not the same.

The preamps on my unit are garbage -- I use the Grace Design 101, and an ART dual channel when I need it.

But, the final sound from the 2816 is very good and I suspect it is good from your AW16 unit as well.


So, what is the real problem? A compressor? RNC compressors are given good grades in the tabloids. There are are many, many other good ones out there.


So, I guess you'll have to look and listen and decide and buy.

Does the 16 have omni outs? That's the way you'd do it on the 4416 - route track to omni out, into compressor or whatever, back into 4416 via an input and route the track to wherever.

There are specialist boards around for your machine that may be able to answer the question in more detail.
