Using Compression plugins

Hi. Can anybody give me a brief step-by-step method for setting up compression on vocals. I've never used a compression plugin and don't know if I should compress during or after recording vocals. I don't even really know how to activate the plugin (is it through the "insert effect" button?).

If somebody could give me a couple of tips as to when (before/after) to compress and briefly how to set up a compressor plugin I'd be really grateful.

Okay, quick hint on how to get more replies: always include the name of the recording software and the plug-in you're trying to use.

In order to setup the compressor you should know exactly why you've decided to use one in the first place. Dynamic compression is a pretty complex topic.
