using a mixer with MBOX2/Pt?

aaah, thank you very much for that
i had no idea:o
as they make it sound like itd be fine

i was just thinking about a wee bit more control
though i dont know how much better a mixer would be
as ive only ever used the keyb/mouse
and for the ease of using the effects rather than use plug ins

i only have 1GB memory on this Mini Mac,and it sometimes tell me its struggling

thanks again:cool:

You're macmini shouldn't really be struggling, I've got one at it's great. do you use many virtual instruments?

What's the error message you get?
Are you running an external HD?

Also, if you want a cheap way to get some faders under your fingers, check this out:

the only time I'll recommend BLEHringer!

thanks for the reply mate

i dont even know what virtual instruments are,so i guess not:D
and free plug ins ive downloaded arent even showing up
so that cant be causing it
there have been a few new error messages lately,
which pop up as playback or record stops

not enough this or that type of thing
i havent written them down to be honest
but im sure its all down to me not following the proper procedures

yes,,i have an external drive
but its only recently occurred to me that i actually dont know how to have things set so that i know im recording to THAT drive,
rather than to the system drive
which i know is to be avoided. perhaps thats part of the problem?:o
and thank you for that link, i will check it out

Either save the session (for the first time) on to that harddrive, or click "save copy in" and select that drive.

I strongly recommend buying and reading the pro tools 101 manual - I found it really helped me get started with PT; though some find they like to just jump in and get started!

Perhaps try increasing the hardware buffer size. That may help reduce these errors.

hi Pezking
thanks mate
is it as simple as that? jeez:o
well,,id been doing that,sometimes
other times, ive been doing it the other way around

DOH!

i actually have Pro Tools For Dummies,,
and another, the title of which escapes me
but sadly they are in one of many boxes back home in Scotland that i cant afford to have shipped
along with some of my favourite guitars i might add:(
the only one i have right now is called Pro Tools Power
by Colin MacQueen and Steve Albanese
which i doubt is as in depth as it could be for the likes of me!

i have indeed often had the buffer size up and down like a cheap strumpets drawers!:p
cheers:cool:

Yeah - a quick google yielded:

Sound on Sound said:
Recent updates to the B-Control firmware (from v1.06 upwards) have introduced a handful of rather interesting control options — though at the moment, this applies to the BCF2000 only. By pressing the correct buttons during power-up, its possible to convince the BCF that it's a Mackie Control for Steinberg Cubase SX and Nuendo or Cakewalk Sonar, a Logic Control for Apple Logic, or a Mackie Baby HUI for various applications, including Pro Tools and Cubase SX or Nuendo. When emulating these other controllers, the BCF has very similar functionality, with banks of eight mix control channels changed by the preset up and down buttons. In Pro Tools LE, for example, level-riding, pan, solo, mute and track-arm functions are supported, along with basic transport operations

I tend to always have it set and the second longest size - 1024 I believe. And this works great for me - however I never do any recording on my home setup, only mixing. I've also noticed I ALWAYS have to disable Airport, as Pro Tools will almost never playback with Airport on. Weird ? I think it's something to do with have OSx 10.4.11 (uncertified)..

when i bought the Mac Mini, it was with the intention of using it ONLY
for recording on Pro Tools.
but,,,:o
the temptation to be online with the Mac was too tempting
as my pc got rather messed up during shipping from Scotland

i dare say that having airport on and being online at the same time doesnt help
with smooth PT use, but id been assured by other Mac users that this wee machine could easily handle all that and more
thats a strange thing with your PT problem

mine tends to run fine mostly, but cuts out now and then with some message or other onscreen about not enough something or other!
but maybe i should be staying ofline whilst recording
sadly im a slave to being online:D

yes, the whole Airport issue is a bit strange. To be honest though, I don't mind, if anything it stops me getting distracted when I should be concentrating!

It would help us solve your problem if the "some message or other" was slightly more qualified! Next time you encounter the problem, write down both exactly what is says and the error number :)

well,,i know what you mean there!
half the time ive got one eye on 3 cats,
hoping they arent howling while im doin a vocal or acoustic part

as ive heard them in the background in a few recordings up til now!

aye,,i know mate:p
im usually so pissed off by seeing the message that i just click to get rid of it and try and continue a.s.a.p
but i shall write them down next time and add them to this thread

so you can all see what im doing worong:D

well ,,heres one of them
it froze up on me 3 times, during pretty good takes too:mad:

"Dae cant get audio from the drive(s) fast enough
Your drive may be too slow or fragmented, or a firewire drive may be havuing trouble due to the extra firewire bandwith or cpu load.(-9073)"

also,,after i clicked ok to continue
it then did its favourite error of freezing up and giving me the
rainbow wheel of death when trying to import a drum loop:mad:

then of course,, force quit does nothing
and when it does quit the PT screen,
PT is still open in the dock and wont go away

so i then have to unplug the MBOX 2 and restart the Mac

what a pain in the arse!

What hard disc have you got?

Digidesign don't support writing to the system drive, or to USB drives.

The drive spindle speed should be a minimum of 7,200RPM and you should choose firewire as your external connection type.

Ok.

Give me the run-down of your HD - tech specs, and how its connected to your computer - as well as what other peripherals are connected to your compt. How long have you had the drive for? When was the last time you wiped it?

The error flagged up was about your hard drive, and pro tools not being able to get audio from it fast enough. This can be because your HD is too slow, the way the data is stored is mangled, or the buss your HD is connected to is trying to transfer too much info at a time (I had issues connected my HD to my MacMini at the same time as using the Focusrite Liquid Channel, as the both FW's were running off the same buss..).

thanks for the help with this guys
i had no idea it HAD to be firewire,or id have known better:(

this is my relevant computer spec as far as i know how to find it!
its a Hammer 500 Gig Drive

im not sure how to tell you what speed :o

ive only had it a few months, from new
and its virtually empty.
its connected to a 4 way hub,,then into the Mac
