can you use a usb mixer, and just sonar, or do you still have to have some kind of interface ?? trying to set up a frind on a tight budget....
thanks,

You won't need an interface. However, USB generally only allows 2 channels, whereas firewire allows all channels of the desk, in my understanding. If you only need to record 2 channels at a time, get the USB, if you need any more, get a firewire...

^^ This is true. USB doesn't have the power to transfer more than 2 Channels at a time... also known as stereo. You might be better just getting an anolog mixer which will cost less, and just go from the RCA Outs into the Line-In of your PC Soundcard.

I agree. Or get the Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202, which is less likely to have the latecy problems an on-board soundcard usually has.

sorry for the double post.

i was in a hurry this morning, and it looked like the first time didn't go...anyway. thanks, i did not know that about the usb limitation. I was thinking of getting, a delta 44 or 66, and a small behringer mixer. saw they have usb ones, an thought we could skip the delta..or try and find a firewire interface. thanks again

the budget is 550 . that fireboxlooks pretty tempting, we have sonar 4 already, and studio project c1 mic. need some monitors, and an interface.....

Saw a used set of event TR 8 for 249 on ebay...
