If it were that simple, Apple would be outselling PCs many to one. The're not.

Each has their +s and -s. Both offer expanded bandwidth for audio apps compared to other PC interface appraoches (other than PCI cards).

I think I'm gonna agree with Brzilian on this one. I'm not really sure what point you were trying to make.... but it really is that simple. Are you trying to say that Microsoft wouldn't try to drive a business into the ground ?
 
I don't think it has much to do with Apple, but the design approach used.

USB 1.1 hit PC's first with a low speed easy approach to add-on gear. It went well. USB 2.0 was designed to be a high speed expansion. That has gone well enough to become the standard in PCs today.

Fireware was designed from the start for somewhat higher sustained performance and had no history to deal with.

As most studies have shown, firewire has better sustained performance.
