Ok this might not be a practical way of obtaining protools 9. But i have afriend who wants to upgrade to Pt 9. Also, he doesn't own any protools program. Any way, we were thinking that he can purchase Pt 8 with an ilock and we can install Pt 8 using my Digidesign 003+. Then he can install Pt 9. Will that work. or will we have any issues?

To buy a Pro Tools 9 upgrade, you need the serial number of a piece of Avid/Digidesign hardware. You can get one Ilok authorization for each serial number. Otherwise, you have to buy the full PT 9 package.

Frankly, I couldn't figure out how the hell your scheme works, but what I've outlined above is how it actually works...

Won't work. Prior to 9, you just needed to have Digi hardware attached (mbox, 003, etc), and you could install the software on as many machines as you like (because it would only run if their hardware was attached, natch').

With 9 they changed it to iLok only, so you can't run 9 without an iLok. You can get student discounted pricing for $300 on a new license though from various places.

It would be better to buy a new package of pro tools 9 instead of buying pro tools 8 then upgrade it.It is a very long procedure and not sure that would it work or not.So buy the pro tools 9 with ilok and it costs just $500 or you can buy student version worth $300
