I AM CURRENTLY USIND A SMALL MIXER AND STOCK SOUNDCARD , I WANT TO UPGRADE MAINLY TO GET BETTER DRUM SOUND VIA 7-8 MICS FOR A KIT
AND BE AbLE TO MIC AND PROCESS DRUMS INDIVIDUALLY .....I AM TORN BETWEEN UPGRADING TO MAYBE A 1010LT OR A SIMILAR SOUNDCARD WITH A BETTER MIXER OR PREAMP...OR GETTING AN ALL IN ONE UNIT THAT I COULD USB TO PC FOR EDITING TRACKS IF NEEDED OR DO ALL IN ONE....
I AM LOOKING FOR QUALITY SIMILAR TO A COMMERCIAL CD ......24BIT

search under my name on this bbs. lots of info. stay away from usb.
an amd athlon properly configured will do 40 to 80 tracks or more.
more than a standalone. ive been burnt by proprietary standalone units in the past.

Are you looking for portability? There are some nice standalone units that perform very well. I've used units from Boss, Roland and Yamaha. Never been burned by them as they all lived up to what they were suppose to function as - portable, high quality digital multi-track recorders. USB isn't necessarily evil either, but firewire would be better or digital outs from the standalone DAW.

If you have a PC in place already near your drums (or wherever), I'd look into updating the PC and going from there. When you say "commerical" CD sound, well there's a lot to that statement. Part of it is the tools you have, part of it is how you use it all. I could go on for days I imagine, but it's all been done here before. Just do a little searching and reading.

That's not true I have a tascam us428 since april and have not had one problem with it using nuendo and a compaq p III 933mhz with windows xp upgrade so I'm using it on an old computer and have had no problem with latency or anything

rd423. if it works for you thats great. i'm happy for you.
but a lot of people seem to have problems with usb if you check around various recording sites. i personally wont use it.
just call me a biased computer engr if you wish.
