Folks,

What would you recommend for an upgrade to a SM57 and SM58 recording acoustic guitars mostly? I've read the threads on upgrading to small diaphram condenser mics, but i'm concerned that i just don't have the quietness required in my surroundings to help me make the most of them. (PC is very close to mic, in my setup, can't move it anwhere else). Anyway, what would u recommend in dynamics to upgrade from what i currenlty use for better sound quality?

Thanks in advance.

I'd still try and go with a SDC... I don't know what your budget is... but for example, the Marshall Electronics MXL603S is cheap Chinese made budget mic that sounds good on most acoustic guitars... just keep the gain down (use no more gain that necessary) and use a packing (movers) blanket or sleeping bag or something to block out some of the PC fan noise and etc from getting into the mic.

Yes, the cardioid pattern will reject most of the noise if you are pointing the mics away from it. A pair of MXL603s will work well IMO.

Tdukex,

I just ordered a pair of MXL603s based on the many positive comments at this site, and moved my PC as far as i can away from the recording space.

Will the spending never end in an effort to make good sound??

Thx for the replies, folks.

Yes, but not untill we die...enjoy your new MXL603S.

You might also look at making your PC quieter. I was at Fry's a couple of days ago and saw some nice low-noise CPU fans and replacement power supplies, and a rather nice, though expensive watercooling kit.
