I'm a musician, not an engineer, who has learned to use Pro Tools in my project studio as a paid income. I've provided as much info as I think is needed to have some opinions offered by other Pros.
1. I use this PC only for recording and have no other software loaded
2. Operating System Windows XP (SP3) with:
P4 3.4
2 gig of Ram (max motherboard will accept)
Pro Tools Version LE 7.1
1 250 GB SATA drive for Operating System
1 500 GB SATA drive for Recording
DigiDesign Mbox 2
3.The current system runs great for how I use it, but I’m getting further away from the newest version of PT LE and I’m starting to have some weird things happening when importing from HD 8 systems into my system.
4.I have a fair amount of paid plug ins.
5.I use my studio mainly to overdub audio music tracks from sessions that are sent to me from Pro Tools HD Systems.
6.I do use/add midi for various projects on occasion for projects in my studio.
7.I have 100 + sessions that were recorded using this current version of PT that I would like to keep for future use.
My main 3 questions are:
1. Will my current computer system run PT 8 without bogging down as it currently runs using PT 7.1 now just fine?
2. Again, most studio’s that send me tracks have now up-graded to HD PT 8. I have started to have some weird things happening when importing the session into my system. Is it because of the version I’m using?
Since I do this as part of my living, I can’t afford the time or expense to take this system based on guessing that up dating my version will work. Yes, I have researched this on the Internet and Forums, but the responses are not documented if it’s Pro’s responding or not (no disrespect meant towards anyone else and how they use their system).
So, I’m asking Pro’s that also do this for their opinions. I understand that buying a new computer would give me more memory by up dating to Windows 7, and then PT 8, and that would solve most of this, less loosing the plug-ins. However, the current budget isn’t a real good possibility to do this at this time.
Again, my main concern is that my project studio be totally compatible with HD version 8 and understanding that if I can do this, I would loose my paid plug-ins as the trade off for up-grading to the latest PT LE version.
Thanks in advance for your time and opinions!
