Hey, guys. We just finished a new tune called "Ungrateful" that's posted at http://www.mp3.com/30SoS It's a little different than our previous stuff (more moody/dynamic)... Please take a listen and let us know what you think and any suggestions you have. Thanks as always!

I like it!

It's definitely different, but this is the kind of diversity you need. I like the drums on the verses a lot, they're more hard-hitting and less "processed" sounding than on your older stuff. I like the vocal harmonies too. And the guitar sound is nice, I could be wrong but it sounds like you're backing off on the distortion a little... very nice. And the bass sound is more out front, sounds like you got a little compression going there... All in all, a stong song, a nice departure from your other material... And you didn;t really use any of the things you've used in your other songs, like vocal distortion or chopped-up vocals...

Thanks for checkin' in, charger. Yeah, this is a bit of a departure for us but I think it still fits the 'sound' of our other stuff. Oddly enough, I didn't really make any changes production-wise... same tones, effects, etc. I think the style of the song probably just accentuates some of the production stuff... Any suggestions?

Any other thoughts or opinions on the new track? Let us know... Thanks!

Very loud but very comfortable tones.
On that break at 1:26 I would have added a few more notes going higher with that progression until it SCREAMED, and screw the overall meter of the tune.
Nice job getting some low tones that are really low but still comfortable to listen to.

Wow, really good!! This isn't the kind of music I listen to (obviously), but I thought it sounded totally pro. The singing, the groove, the song. What's your setup on the lead vocal (mic, comp, preamp), and what do you record on?

Macle

Thanks for the comments, guys!

drstawl -- that's a cool idea with the harmonics. i tend to avoid time changes, but i'm sure our drummer would be all over it ;). Thanks also for the comments on the tones. I don't think I did anything special though -- just lucked out with some solid keyboard patches...

macle -- thanks, man! high praise indeed after listening to your post earlier. i never thought i'd get asked about my vocal setup -- i've been struggling for months to get a sound i'm happy with -- just ask the unfortunate (but very helpful) souls reading my previous posts. i will say though, the verses here come close to what i'm after... anyway, i'm using an akg c3000 mic through a dbx 286A preamp. all effects are added at mixdown through my art dr-x 2100. we record on a homemade pIII 600 computer with a wami rack 24 soundcard and sonar/sound forge as the programs of choice. let me know if you're after any other details...

Thanks again for the input -- any other thoughts or suggestions out there?

mary,

nice programming. I like the kick sounds you used.

I think the vocal sound has improved a lot. It is now quite warm and rich sounding.

Cool song.

Hello..

As per usual, the songwriting is stellar. This time the vocals sound a lot richer than they used to. Good job.

To me it sounds as if the lows of the bass is a little bit out of control and muddies up the mix a little. That's all I can whine about after listening to it three times (besides mp3 artifacts).

Good job mary.

Thanks for checking in, guys!

Cyan -- thanks on the programming. and yeah, i think i'm finally getting close to the vocal sound i've been chasing...

Meshuggah -- glad you dig the songwriting still. this is a little different (more mellow in a way), but i think it's still fairly consistent with our sound. and i hear you on the bass. we're going to try some compression experiments on our next track to try and tighten things up -- currently, i'm not using any compression on the guitar or bass, just what's added when we 'master' the final mix (i use that term very loosely...)

I'm glad you guys are hearing an improvement in the vocal tone -- any other thoughts or suggestions to go along with tightening up the bass? Let me know...

Well it just goes to show you, I rememebr seeing lots of comments and reviews that the AKG C3000 wasn't that great, that it was kind of thin and harsh or something, but it obviously works for you. So you don't use a compressor on the way in? How far off the mic are you when you're doing the harder edged singing? Do you have a booth or anything?

Macle

Hey, macle. It took a while for me to get the c3000 to produce the sound I'm getting now (just listen to "Relativity", which I plan to re-record the vox), but yes, after spending some quality time with my vocal processor, I've managed to squeeze something out of it.

And I should clarify... I don't have any compression on the guitar or bass, but I'm compressing the vox like crazy when I record and again when I mix down -- I think that's what made the difference in the sound. I'm always about 3-6 inches off the mic, maybe a little further when I'm really screaming :D. And no, we don't have a booth -- our whole set-up is as unprofessional as you could imagine, squeezed into a little 2nd story bedroom with hardwood floors and a couple windows. It's laughable in terms of sound-proofing, but I hope to do something with it sometime. If I can swing it, I'll see if I can upload a photo sometime -- I think everyone would get a kick out of it. That'd be a good thread actually -- show us your studio! May have to consider that...

Anyway, thanks again for checking out the stuff and let me know if I missed anything.

It ROCKS !!

How did I miss this for a week?

Excellent...your best so far.

I'm curious, have you been shopping a demo around - because you should be.

tcdave -- thanks for giving us a listen. I don't know if you've already posted one of your tracks and I missed it (I don't always get out here as often as I'd like), but either way, throw a link up and let us check you out -- your stuff sounds intriguing...

dole -- I've been wondering if you were still out here ;) Good to hear from you again. We're really glad you like the new track -- I'm not sure if I'd agree best so far, but it may be that I'm partial to some of the others as songs (rather than mixes). And no, we haven't started shopping anything yet -- we have a few more tunes we'd like to record. But we do hope to starting fishing around sometime soon. We're flattered that you think we're already there

Thanks for taking the time to post, guys. Any other suggestions or opinions out there?
