Uncontroled clipping when miking cab at high volume into BR8

I just got a sm57 yesterday and made a quick clip last night at low volume--it sounded great. Today I cranked the amp and gave it a go--nasty. I'm getting lots of clipping no matter how much I pull back on the trim pot or what level in I'm at. I've re-positioned the mic, etc, etc, etc...

Is this just the way things are with the br8? Do the mic pre's not handle that strong of a signal? I've always just recorded direct with it since I didn't have a 57 and now that I'm looking at a new PC as a DAW I'm planning on keeping the br8 as an interface since it has so many effects onboard, yadda yadda. Could this be a bad idea?

I have a killer amp and really want to record it. Should the br8 work for this or should I ditch it and put the funds into a bigger, badder DAW?

Thanks

I may have found my problem; the adapter I'm using to go xlr to 1/4" is unbalanced--could this be it?

Its possible

Are you bypassing the COSM effects?

If not you need to be aware of the patch you are using.
I would try it with the bypass, and experiment with some patches and I'll bet you find something that works.

I use my BR8 for all tracking and then load into my computer. It's convenient, and the COSM patches come in handy at times. Don't forget that you can turn them off if you want too.

Good Luck

Thanks Joel. I'm bypassing and have tried low levels etc...still no luck. Are you able to mic a big tube amp cranked up with no clipping on your br8?

Actually, I never tried it cranked , but it just seems odd that you can't get a setting that won't clip.
What kind of amp are we talking about here? How powerful?
Did you try a balanced adapter?

It's a xxx, 120watts. Yeah, I know--crazy loud. It's those dynamics I want to capture though and you don't get them anywhere else.

The reason I'm so concerned is that I need to run the master at like 1.5 or less in order to eliminate the clipping. It's a good recorded tone, but lacks those dynamics I'm after.

I haven't been able to find a balanced adapter and I'm hesitant to buy a new cable until I decide on just what my new setup is going to be.

Thanks

How about different mic placement.
Have you put the mic well.......all over the place for different tracks?
There may be a sweet spot that could deliver the dynamics you are after.

You have got me going on this one so I am really interested in how things work out for ya!
