Why so serious?
I tried installing Ubuntu on a spare computer. I couldn't even get the thing to boot up right. And with my impatient ass, that shit didn't last too long.

This thread may be done, but I use Ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop with no problems - I have Ubuntu Studio 8.10 I'm getting ready to install on my recording box, though I used it for a short time in 8.04 in a dual boot setting. If I'm not mistaken, Ubuntu Studio already has the firewire & USB configured for audio and video in the kernel - that might help some of you who are wanting to try it. Configuring audio seems a bit different and complicated in some apps because of having to have jack running, but in the latest install of Ardour on my desktop jack seems to be transparent instead of a standalone. I'd like to keep my vst effects, but I'm not sure I can compile everything to make 'em work. I believe though, that Linux is on it's way to being an good alternative for audio.
I think your up against it trying to run Windows based software on Linux.
