goood thing I didn't doubt you ;)
So what does this mean for me. Does this void the warranty on it if I do buy one from an authorized dealer?

No, it just means that the only ones out there are the ones that are still in the pipeline. Once they are gone, you won't be able to buy it anymore. If you were planning to maybe get another in the future for more channels, you would probably have to buy used. (assuming you can use two at the same time)

I bought a U87 sold on consignment at a local music shop over the summer for about $1400. (After the damn tax :eek:). If you get the serial number you can go to the forums for Neumann Berlin and find out about the manufacturing date. I found out mine rolled off the assembly line in 1985.

You can test the capsule by doing a "breath test" where you exhale hot air into the mic. If the capsule has lost tension or has buildup of dirt and residue from past singers it will stick to the backplate and temporarily not pass a good signal through it/create a rumbling sound.

The other thing you have to be careful of is what kind of output configuration it is in. Pro audio equipment varied alot I guess back then because you could have a U87 built with a 50, 100, 150, or 200 ohm output or something like that. I heard it had something to do with old console preamps? I have to crank my preamp up pretty high in order to get a line level out of the U87 compared to my AKG. The Neumann support that helped me on the forum said that it could be one of two problems. The open circuit sensitivity of the old U87s is way less than that of a U87ai, or other condenser mics on the market, or my mic was built with a different output configuration. (Sometimes you can identify this with a red dot next to the serial number in the XLR jack, but not always.)

I love the sound from my U87. WAY less hyped on the high end than my AKG 414. It sounds more natural. The other thing that the U87 has going for it is much smoother off axis response than cheaper condenser mics. I'm still thinking about sending it in to Neumann USA to get it checked up on, get the diaphragms cleaned, make sure the output configuration is right for my more modern gear. I don't trust myself to try and change the output configuration myself with a mic of that cost and quality, and a REALLY don't trust myself to do a capsule cleaning!

I've heard that it dosent cost a whole lot to get these services done. maybe $100-150? A used U87 was too good of an investment for me to pass up. It could be for you too!
