Both were recorded with a Shure SM57 about a foot away from me, about neck height, angled towards vocals, with me sitting and the Guild F-30 (Grand Auditorium size) strumming along. The mic has an M-Audio DMP3 preamp going into an EMU 0404 into my computer, recorded using Audacity software. The clips are 192 MP3 bitrate I believe.

All types of suggestions are welcome, from mic position to tweaking to settings on the EMU Patchmix DSP that don't sound like crap (i used no DSP or EQ at all, they all sounded horrible), maybe go D/I with the acoustic since I do have a fishman rare earth soundhole pickup i could use, etc etc - and comments on the actual performances are always welcome as well, thanks! Oh, the "God Knows" track has one overdub of me singing backup to myself, close miked. Thanks all!

You need to mic the guitar as well as your voice. there are heaps of details re this in the mic forum etc - do a search.
The voice sounds OK but suffers from being muddied by the guitar.
The b/vox well done.
The song is good but needs to be re recorded - there are a few odd points in the melody or performance that may come from your need to concentrate on the guitar as well.
Well worth working on.

thanks for the input! yep i think i will record each separately - guitar, vocals, backup vocals. so i can get a nice clear shot at each using the mic without muddying it up. someone else suggested i capo up a few frets too, i'll see if i can handle that range, hehe.

Cool piece, I like the writing, flow, and rhythms here. The vocals and music each sound good on their own. But together they sound a bit detached from each other. The music sounds a bit distant and the vox up front. I recommend using EQ to find your vocals best frequency, raise that a few dB, drop that same frequency in the music, then bring the music up a bunch. That'll blend them better. For the muddiness on the guitar RayC meantioned, try lowering lowering the instrument mix somewhere between 250-500Hz. Anyway, good song, good potential here

God Knows.....

RayC and Snakedog5050 have made a lot of good points that you can use to your advantage. Using two mics - one on vocals and one on guitar would be a thought - or a strategically placed single condensor mic.

The mix sounds good now when you really strum on the guitar but the guitar is low on the quieter parts - like the intro.

The harmonies are very nice now so be careful if/when you raise the key (CAPO) that you retain the same intervals.

Performance/tune is very good - no problems with that.....

:) :D :) :D

Thanks for the suggestions all! Since the DMP3 is a dual input preamp, I think I'll go for the 2-mic route. Since the SM57 is a decent instrument mic, I'm going to go shopping for a mic that does right by my vocal range. Round two after the purchase!
