what does balanced and unbalanced mean when refering to output jacks on a preamp?

when refering to a audio card, specifically the m-audio audiophile 2496, what does the 24/96 stand for. im guessing the 24 means 24 bit. if thats correct then what is the 96 for? whats makes a 24bit card better than others?

Yes, 24 refers to 24 bits which is the sample size.

96 is sample rate that is supported by the card. Cards that support 96KHz will generally also support 88.2, 48 and 44.1 KHz.

CDs use 16 bit samples at 44,100 samples per second.

Other popular sample rates are 48,000, 88,200 and 96,000 samples per second.

Use the search engine. There's plenty of verbiage at this site discussing the pros and cons of using a sample size/rate that is higher than that used on CDs.

Best Soundcard

It does help, thanks! I bought the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 Card. My setup now includes a Shure 58 mic, a M-audio Audio Buddy Preamp, and The Aduiophile sound card. On first impression im extremly pleased by the sound I get from this setup on such a cheap budget. For these items i only spent around 350 including cables. My previous setup was a Radio Shack mic into the mic in on a SoudBlaster Live card os this is a huge step up! phil
