Two Problems with my Tascam DP-01

On is that I am getting no sound from my headphones unless I push headphone volume knob a little sideways. I don't always get sound this way, but if I fool with a bit I can get something most of the time. The sound disappears as soon as I let go.
Secondly, I am getting very low volume with a mic plugged into the left XLR input. It's to the point where that input is pretty much unusable.
Can anyone give me any tips on how to fix these problems. I not a mechanical genius, but I am pretty handy.

A couple of guesses

On the headphone input control: my guess is you have a dirty/broken/ getting ready to break pot. On the xlr input check all of of the connections in your signal chain, and check the mic cable it's self.
