Two new songs

heh heh

Of all the members that you may suspect, I know not one!!! That's pretty funny...WTF? I mean really, I would like to think that I do alright, many people have told me so.
My point is, if this person had talent...or had knowledge of music, why the hell would he/she tell me to friggin stop singing all together? No constructive criticism, no nuggets of wisdom...just you suck!!!! I am no friggin fat lady...but I'd like to think I do alright!!!
Seemed like there was something personal about it, I don't know!!! Maybe because I haven't have someone to tell me to flat out stop singing! After reading other posts by Princess Super Critic it kinda made me feel like this person had a vested interest in making a few of us uneasy. Come to think of it, I am starting to believe it might be someone in disguise. LOL...heh heh.
But really, I'd probably be asking for it to say everything the person said isn't true...but then again I sure as hell don't care.
BTW, I know a few of you were talking about softpeddling...and you're right. HOWEVER, there are people that do compliment my strengths and then go over what needs improvement....and that's what I need. If someone wants to tell me that it's good...and doesn't really want to go into what wasn't so good, that's fine...but, I would also like to know what they found that might need improvement.
Last night, I did an open mic...three songs. I got a great response from the crowd and the person in charge invited me back. Another musican came up to me and asked to speak with me. He gave me some good pointers....I am sure if he didn't care, or didn't see potential, he wouldn't have bothered!!! BTW, The pointers:
-Stop beating the shit out of your guitar (nervous tension :\)
-Let the dynamic mic work for you
I don't believe he said anything about "stop singing". This guy is an awesome guitarist and is also a songwriter. That is the kind of respect we should all have for each other. Gotta take the good with the bad...that is the only way we can improve.

I also think its someone from the forum trying to spark discussion and maybe with an axe to grind. I know that the day I get a "Great job! I love everything you do! you're a genius, man!" post, its time time for me to leave.

I also think SC is trying to pull an American Idol on us and come off like that rat bastard on that show. Except there is one difference. That guy know something about making pop records and all those people want to be pop stars. He has every reason to flame them if they don't conform to what is now a very narrow and easily defined genre.

But people are here to make music, and in this clinic, to make it sound good. We are recording at "HOME" (see url). I'm not sure the vast majority of people here are looking for a contract. They just want to make music they like and they want some people to hear it. Our job on the clinic is like that of a producer, to help them realize their vision, point out things they may not have seen, and rarely, to burst some inflated egos.

None of us will be on the radio, but hey, you won't hear Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Hail to the Thief on the radio either. And those are two of the best albums of this young decade.

Hey, what a concept! Let's use this thread to talk about your music!  :D

Had a listen last night. I love your voice and your delivery. You can play my coffeehouse any time. The guitar style (aka beating the shit out of it) fits the songs very well - kind of a Richie Havens thing?

As to the tunes, I had a little trouble following Two Night Stand. Maybe just me, maybe repeated listening would change that (my first listen to what is now my favorite song, "She Is His Only Need" left me completely cold - thought Wynonna was just all over the map on it - some songs just grow on ya).

The other one (title has left my brain - where's my damn coffee!!!) had a much stronger structure, very engaging. I would avoid the cliches (look how much mileage Prince got out of substituting shoe size for IQ), but some markets like them. It's a great tune and feel though.

Part of your style seems to involve dropping off of notes before you ever quite hit them, especially at the end of phrases. Since your pitch is pretty solid elsewhere, I'm guessing this is a conscious thing. I don't know if I like it, but my problem may just be that I've struggled to sing in tune my whole life, so on-pitch is a highly prized commodity. It didn't stop me from enjoying the song.

I liked your guitar playing a lot, as I mentioned, but the tone seemed dead, like you were on really old strings, or running direct rather than miked, or something. There was a whole lot of color in your voice (nicely recorded!!!), so the colorlessness of the guitar was really noticeable.

Very enjoyable. Nice to hear a female voice! Great work...

...I don't care WHAT sc sez about you.:D :D :D

"Depends on the station. GOD, I love Detroit..."

Dafduc, is there a station Clear Channel has not bought?

It's our NPR affiliate, WDET. They did Wilco LIVE IN THE STUDIO last year.

They webcasted for awhile, quit when the new royalty rules took effect.:( :( :(

I am just starting out (recording, playing live) and I think I am improving every day.

daf-I did the direct plug in btw, the sound had so much high punchiness, that I really had to toy with it...so, that would explain the guitar. Quite frankly, I'm not very happy with the guitar (recording, not to be mistaken for my guitar). I am still trying to finely tune to see what works. I am not sure what you mean about the singing part though. This is by no means the best version of the song...but is was good enough to send off to Copyright. At first it was all I could do to just get the stuff sent off and worry about making it good later.
I am really starting to wonder: Maybe I should really start being selective about what I post. Simply because if I'm not fully satisfied and I know that I won't be the only one. Truth is, I was pressured to post and was given the impression that the imperfections and flaws wouldn't be a big deal. That was the whole point, to relax and not be so damned critical of myself. But, this experience is a valuable thing for me....I am really starting to get a taste of what time it really is!!!
I haven't really gotten a very good response on "Two Night Stand"...I have been told by many people that it's out of character for me, hell maybe it is. But, "No Turnin Round" seems to be doing alright...cliches and all ;). Truth be told, I wrote this song because a certain somebody (who will remain nameless) called my lyrics cryptic...so, this was what I came up with. (And you know who you are :)
You can't make an omelete with out breaking some eggs though (hee hee). It's all about trial and error (heee heeee).
Thanks to everyone for the all of your helpful feedback!!!

Fare thee well young offspring of bdbdbuck.

Oh they learn fast how to turn your words against you!

Two Night Stand-I like the guitar part-cool rhythym-the way it changes up every few measures-Reminds me of something Frank Black (pixies) would do. The vocal melody is good during the verse-but the chorus didnt seem as catchy-I would experiment with different melodies there-many possiblities....The vocal performance itself is good-I can tell you have alot of power in your voice-sounds like its almost hard to keep it restrained heh. Melody, though is the thing that seperates the..... uhh nevermind :). I can totally hear this song rocking out with a full band-with big time dynamics yes yes.....mmm.....

listened to 'no turnin 'round.' I had no idea you were female!

good song and vocal performance.. I was waiting for something to happen though.. The vocals sound good but a bit over compressed to me.. maybe it's the whole mix.. the guitar could be doubled.. I think it would add a lot..

I could picture a heavy version of this song.. The guitar parts doubled with a Mesa rectifier sound, drums etc.. cool..

Yeah!!! That'd be great if I could get some bass and drums in there....Think that might be in the works.

All of my recordings are horrible...My problem is that I get that treble punch then I have to mess with it so that it's audible.
I need to spend more time on the actual recordings so that I won't have to mess with it before I actually work on it. I want to get the recordings clean and flat...but I can't fight the punchiness.
Another problem...I have an internal mic and pickup on the guitar with a blend switch....and since it's pretty new, I haven't really gotten a chance to see what sounds best. I haven't mic'd it up yet...but figured as much dough as I spent on this one, I was going to make it work for me. So, what do you think: internal mic, pick-up (both for direct plug-in) or mic it up?
BD tells me that it will be much easier to work with if I got some monitors (instead of using the headphones)
What I really need to do is put away the cans and get some real truth monitors. Since I can't afford Tannoy's maybe some Behringers (sp?) Think BD has a set...and they're not too bad. Anyway, I am sure that eventually...I'll get the hang of it.

bd has a set of M-Audio BX5's and anything is better than cans. Get what you can afford, they'll make a world of difference.

Ok, there's no way I'm reading these 4 pages.
I listened to the first one....

The song is alright, the first couple of lines could go as far as I'm concerned. After that I didn't really get any meaning but that's ok too. The song is screaming for a band.
Your voice is pretty good but the emotion seems a bit forced at times. I don't get the feeling that you are getting goosebumps but you seem to be feeling...something.

Keep it up, only gets better.

I went through all 3 pages from critiques to super-critic to critiques again. I have to give my 2 cents on all this (like you asked for it, my wife says I'm a know-it-all).
This is not to say that I thought super-critic's comments were right. I believe he is probably just some kid who wants attention. The best way to deal with kids that are trying to get attention in bad ways is to ignore them. They will either stop or try nicer ways to get attention. Super-critic's posts will hereby be ignored by me. But, I said all this to say to buckskid, don't rely on what people say to form your confidence. You know just as I do that you are a good singer. This talent you have will be developed even further (not that it even needs to be) with a deep confidence in yourself.
I am not going to critique your songs any further because I already did in the fostex forum. I stand behind what I said because I have been around music for a long time and I know a good voice and good recording when I hear it. I am not going to add or take away anything from my opinion on a song. I'm gonna shoot it to you straight. Lot's of times jealousy comes into some people's opinions. If you couldn't sing, I would tell you in a nice way. Gotta go.

WOW

Kid,

Promise me when I do my first post, you'll chime in with "This Sucks" Or No, better yet "You're the worst I've ever heard" That'll really get folks to listen. Is SC you!!!?? I've got Watson on the case.

-ok

i listened to two night stand. i liked that title.

your voice is very good.

the recording sounded like it was limited and cranked up pretty high or something cause the hiss or fan noise in the background is jumping out during the quieter parts.

i prefer the sound of an acoustic with a mic on it personally. this sounds like it's run direct and if that's your only choice for recording guitar then so be it, but generally i think acoustic guitars sound better mic'ed.

Well

Thanks gospel again for your support. OKO...chill man, gospel's on our team!!! (I know you were probably kidding anyway).
Gospel is right BTW, next time I'll turn the other cheek when it comes to SC's critique.
I am going to put this one together next time mic'ing it up...we'll see what happens.
I wanna get a new dynamic mic for that project. And as BD has been preaching to me forever...get some real monitors.
eric-that fuzziness is me doctoring up the high punch...and that's how it turned out...really poor recording.
Thanks to everyone for your feedback. :)
