Two microphones, splitting input.

Hi,

I'm using n-track and trying to record separate vocal and guitar (acoustic through a mic) tracks at the same time (ie me singing whilst playing guitar).

I'm using an audigy2 with the drive in the front bay.

I've put one mic in the "Line-In/Mic 2" socket on the audigy drive, and the other in the mic socket on the soundcard itself.

In the n-track preferences, I've got "MME: Wave Mapper" selected as both input and output devices and set the vu-meter setup to record the left channel to track 1 and the right channel to record to track 2.

I've got "What you hear" selected as the recording device.

At the moment when I sing into just one of the mics the sound gets recorded into both track 1 and track 2, but I want each mic to record into a separate track. How can I do this? Can it even be done with my equipment?

I'm a uber-newb so please forgive my painful stupidity, but if any one can point me in the right direction for getting me setup and on my way I'd be very grateful.

In "select audio format" under channels, do you have mono or stereo-two mono tracks selected?

p.s. this comes up when you click the hammer icon on the recording vu meter.

Also, there is an n-track forum here, someone there should be able to help. :)

hi boingoman, it's set to "stereo -> mono" - is this correct?

I'm pretty sure you want to set it to mono. I just got this prog, and am not 100% familiar, but for recording two seperate tracks I would go mono. The stereo-two mono tracks is for recording on both sides of the stereo line input on your card, and makes it into two mono tracks instead of one stereo. Using two seperate inputs, try the mono selection.

When you say two different inputs do you mean I should select two different devices from the "Preferences > Audio Devices" list? If so, which two from the following that are available:

Creative ASIO
MME: Modem #2 Line Record
MME: SB Audigy 2 Audio [9400]
MME: Wave Mapper
SB Audigy 2 ASIO [9400]
WDM: SB Audigy 2 Audio [9400]

(this is the same list for the "playback" too, if my selection on that list would make a difference?)

Also, I don't know if this makes helps, but when I've got n-track open and start playing a music file in windows media player, the recording vu-meter in n-track is responding to that music. Is this correct (I have "what u hear" as the defined recorder).

It's the "What You Hear" setting that's the problem. That tells the AUdigy to record everything passing through it -- which includes the tracks you are trying to overdub over.

Set the recording input to just the Mic In, then try it.

AlChuck, I have tried as you suggested, setting the record source first to "Microphone" and then to "Line In/Mic2" (these are the two sockets through which I have mics connected). The result is that I can only record from one mic at a time, but I want to record from both mics at the same time. Is there no way I can have windows setup to record from "Microphone" AND "Line In/Mic 2" simultaneously?

hmmm. just gotta ask

ok. up front i know not the audigy....
but i just gotta ask..

you have something plugged into the "mic2" slot.
what is in the mic 1 slot on the audigy or does it have i, i assume it does

trying to record from 2 different sound card has gotta be just next to DIFFICULT at best...

radiorickm, I'm only recording through the one soundcard, but the audigy just has one of these control decks in a 5.25" drive bay which is more for convenience than anything else.

However, after looking through the FAQ's on n-track's site it turns out that I can't record from two inputs simultaneously anyway, according to this http://ntrack.com/faq.shtm#2.s.

This is quite fustrating. Therefore I may just have to go out and buy another soundcard - perhaps an external USB device so I don't have to open the case up, would that be fast enough do you think? Any recommendations?

Check my reply in your other thread on the n-Track section of this board.

In case anyone is having this same problem, I found the solution, with a little help from crankz - see it in this thread
