what is tempered tuning?

and twist, i did read it but my problem is not the g string it's the high b and e...i play acoustic only..dunno if that makes a difference..

electronic tuners are great but when i'm just jamming around i will tune on the fly...using harmonics or fretted notes..

The need for tempered tuning is easy to demonstrate. If you tune any interval; 3rd, 5th, etc. so that it is perfect, then tune it's complement so that it's perfect, you'll find that the two notes you just tuned an octave apart are not in tune with each other. Obviously, the octaves MUST be in tune with each other, so the solution is to "detune" the other notes in between by a few cents. The amount and direction of the "detuning "are determined by the interval. for example 4ths are expanded and 5ths are contracted.

There are inherent problems with tuning that come from the system we use to manufacture guitars.
With the frets we use straight pieces of fret wire to intonate from but in fact some need to be offset.
Try this, tune your "G" with your tuner and then fret it at the 2nd. fret (A), its always sharp, this is the worst on the neck but the same problem is there in other fret positions as well.
Harmonics can also give your ears shit. I picked this one up years ago and it seems to help by changing the harmonics slightly.

I tune to A442 as it sounds brighter or "alive" to me, then
E (6th) 442
A (5th) 441.5
D (4th) 441.5
G 441.75
B 442
E 442

Hope this works for you, it works in straight 440 as well.

I was stumbling through the tuning there for a second but your diagram makes it easier. I can spend more time listening to the tuning than trying to figure out what the Guild document was saying. After looking at what you put up, and then rereading the Guild letter again, it all made sense.

Why do I get the feeling I just made myself out to be Forrest Gump. :D Oh well, at least I learned something.

It's funny how a six pack a Leinie's resolves all these tuning issues. Although the "Bob Marley" tends to have the opposite effect.

The only time I ever use a tuner is to establish the low E (and only then when I record). Otherwise, I just do the following with the guitar distorted:

Tune the A at the 2nd fret against the low E to match the perfect fifth
Tune the D at the 2nd fret against the low E string
Tune the G at the 2nd fret agaist the A string
Tune the B at the 3rd fret against the D
Tune the E at the 3rd fret against the G

Most of my playing doesn't involve 3rds, and when they do crop up adjustments are minimal.

Seems to work well with acoustic guitars too.

Another way is to tune all strings to one reference pitch.Say its E.Tune the 6th string open.5th at the 7th fret,4th at the 2nd fret,3rd at the 9th,2nd at the 5th and 1st open.

It included some great information and was very detailed.
