What is your prefered method of guitar tuning?

I play the harmonic at 12 and fret the note one string higher at 7 (8 on the B string).

I use multiple points of reference. harmonics at 5th and 7th. fretted notes vs open strings, and when all else fails, I have a Sabine.

Anybody have troubles with keeping "G" in tune. I've found that having it just a little flat to the rest of the tuning sounds correct. It's annoying most of the time. Maybe it's just the strings I use.

try using a wound g string (damn that's funny ) although i mean it... though there are several ways to interpret that sentence

Not to open a can of worms,but when the G sounds flat the person tuning is using his ears to make perfect fourths or fifths as he tunes.Unfortunately,in order to successfully modulate keys (be in tune everywhere on the neck) you have to use Mr.Bach's system of tempered tuning.All the electronic tuners have those fractional corrections from "perfect" built in.Use your ear on the fly when quick and dirty is close enough for jazz.But use a tuner when the situation is a little more critical.

I always have trouble with the high b and e on my acoustic...the unwound strings...

I seem to ALWAYS go sharp on the b especially when tuning by ear...(5th and 7th harmonics or fretting the string above at the 5th)....

I'm 100% perfect on all the others..must be the 25 years of bass guitar lol...

Re-read Toms post. There is no such thing as being perfectly in tune at every position. It is a scientific compromise.

sometimes I tune my guitar and it sounds ok clean. But when I put distortion in it, I hear beats that come and go as I retune it.
Is there a way to tune for distortion?

Do you play any open chords distorted? If not, tune your guitar with unison notes from the 2nd fret to about the 9th fret... You may be slightly out of tune with open strings. With open chords, sometimes you can easily compensate by bending the notes slightly. Not quite as easy with bar chords. Another option is to add some chorus and slight delay. I'm not a huge chorus fan, but a just a tad can help fatten your sound and blend out of tunedness. nice word.. tunedness...

Having new strings does wonders for intonation om my guitars.

Also I tune (or check tunning) by octaves alot lately. i.e open G-string (he he) and G note on high E and low E stings. This makes good tunning for G chord but might make open E chord a little off.
So I play with it untill I find a good compromise. it seems open E is more tolerant to being little off then G.

I would also dissagree that you should go with the tunner for all strings. It's a good start but you might need/want to adjust a little. Also for recording you could probably favor certant cords
over other depending on a key.

I guess you're right, cause the electronic tuner says that the open strings are ok. I adjusted intonation, but it seems the bridge is moving a little.

cordura; definately intonate your guitar. I'm lazy so I bring it to my shop... i think you need to intonate quite often in order to prevent the "distortion" problem... it has nothing to do with the distortion btw...
