Does anyone know of anything like this. A pedal or a box that has real tubes in it. It could be used as a preamp, like the last thing in the effects chain before the amp. I currently use the SansAmp GT-2, and it sounds pretty good but it doesnt have an actual tube in it. I found info on the Tube Works 911 Classic Tube Driver Effects Pedal. It seems to have real tubes, it says: "Features 12AX7A and ECC83 tubes." so wouldn't that mean it has atleast two tubes in it? More tubes the better! Anyone know about this Tube Works 911?

Don't know about the 911 pedal, but I have one of the Tubeworks Rock Driver pedals. Its shaped like a wedge of cheese and has one 12AX7 tube in it. For like 68 bucks its not really that bad. I have, however, swapped out the original tube for a NOS Telefunken one, which did improve the sound SOME. Though I can't say for sure without some research, I would hazard a guess that the pedal you mentioned has only one tube. (a 12AX7 and ECC83 are the same tube, just diff. manufacturers numbers). If it did have two, that would then be pretty cool...er, I mean warm. But don't get too psyched about these pedals, as there are still solid state components in them (opamps) in your signal path. Not that solid state is by definition a bad thing, just that there's really no tube mystique in preamp overdrive. You might just as well hit the front end of a tube amp hard with a clean gain boost and overdrive THOSE tubes. Kinda the same, but kinda different, and as always, totally subjective. As far as the more tubes, the better, I play a multi-amp setup and tubes are freaking expensive. 23 some-odd tubes at at least 12-15 bucks a pop. You get the idea. I figure a few more years and it will be time for "Line 6, take me away!"

peace.

How about the Mesa V-Twin?

Anyone have one of these? What do you think about it? I'm just wanting to add some major tube tone to my sound (the SansAmp GT-2 just isnt adding enough.) I've heard that this Mesa V-Twin has 2 tubes in it and cranks some major tube tone..

I've messed around with the V-Twin some, but I ended up buying a Boogie amp instead(Nomad 2x12 45 watt.)It works well but it has a tendancy to make anything you plug it into sound like a Boogie, which of course to some could only be a good thing...

humm, i'm looking for more of a "tweed" (Fender) tube tone..

Matchless had a pre amp pedal before they went out of business. There may be a few floating around used.

And besides the mesa v-twin theres the mesa formula recording pre wich is based on their heartbraker amps.

and hughs and kettner also have a tube pre amp pedal,
as does budda..

mesa.hughs and kettner, budda and matchless all make stuff that is consiudered unrivaled. It depends on taste though imho so youll need to try these things out.

Hey, Soldano makes a tube pedal. I think it has three tubes and it is an all tube signal path. I've seen them through Musician's Friend for about $350.

Peace, Jim
