Mixing and Mastering.
I currently own a JCM2000 DSL50 Marshall tube amp going into 1960 Marshall 4x12 cab.
I am looking into getting a new amp, I will probably keep the cab though to save buying a new cab also.

Does anyone have any suggestions of good quality tube amps for hard rock/metal style music? Ive hear Randal are meant to be good, but not sure about them.
The other guitarist in my band has a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, so even though its a great amp I would like something a bit different so our tones are different.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Eck

hrmmm the only suggestion I can think of is to just go to a guitar store with your guitar and try out as many amps as you can. No one can really tell you what you like.. never been a fan of the mesa or he marshall sound.. except for the mesa lonestar.. it'll give you a very different tone than the duel rect. I'm an orange/fender guy myself but that's not really what your looking for.

yeah don't sell your cab the 1960 marshall is SWEET

Thanks man.
Yeah I like the cab, its nice and light. :)
Not any decent guitar shops about really.
pretty limited amp selection, and Im probably looking for something a bit less well known to suit my sound.

Cheers,
Eck

check out some of the old Traynor heads, they are pretty sweet.

the other big thing is budjet.. you might like an orange rockerverb 30 or something of the like.. great tones..

or go with a hiwatt..

again look up the mesa lonestar (you can get it in head form as well as a combo).. only problem with getting any of these amps is the hefty price tag you get with it.. but if i had the money i'd either have the rockerverb 30 or a hiwatt.. both amps would sound sweet with your 1960 cab. but you're looking at around or over 2 grand

p.s. I hear ya about the lack of good guitar stores.. make a road trip to somewhere that does have a good selection.. do your homework on sounds that you like and see what that guitarist uses.

Yeah Ive done a little bit of research into this but Im gona do a whole load more!

I always figured the JCM2000 sound was kind of tailor made for metal. I can't imagine what would work better for that modern high gain sound, if you didn't dig a mesa rectifier tone.

What kind of metal tone are you going for?

Will do.
Thanks man,
Eck

i think there's a couple clips on YouTube of some of the older Traynor heads, not great sound quality, but you can get sort of a feel for how they sound. pretty chunky.

I really like my Mesa nomad 45 for metal. I don't really care for the Rectifiers but for what it is worth this Mesa sounds a lot more like a Marshall but with way more switching/reverb/eq options. I also have a Framus Cobra that rocks pretty hard but they don't come cheap. What are you looking to spend?

Dude, there are so many good amps for rock and metal out there. Nobody can steer you to the right one, you've just got to find a way to try them out or at least hear them in action somehow so you can decide what you like the best.

Describe what you don't like about the Marshall or what you want in your sound and maybe somebody can make some better suggestions.

had a dude come into my studio a year ago with a 15?watt Soldano tube amp going through a Marshall 1960 4X12 and it sounded awesome. jat

I have a Laney AOR Series 100Watt Pro-Tube Lead driving a Marshall JCM 800 LEAD 1960 4x12 Quad and it keeps me happy.

Hey Gorty I have an AOR Pro Tube 100 also, but a combo. Pretty cool amp. Very dark, though, and kinda old school slayer sounding. What kind of sounds do you you get out of it?

Mike
