I have a Tascam tsr 8 track on the way to me and need some help with my engineering skills (lack of). What is a good book for me to get to help with the basics- tape machine maintenance, signal chain, mic technique, getting individual headphone mixes, using compression correctly, getting good sounds, picking the right mic pre's etc. I have a mackie 1604 mixer and some decent mic's, a pair of Tannoy reveal monitors and a power amp for them and a bunch of mic cable's. I want to get 6-8 decent mic pre's and just use the mackie for playback. I am planning to use this set up to record rhythm tracks of my band in my house and then take them to a friend who has pro tools rig and over dub and do vocals and mix there on his 2 track Studer. Advice appreciated.
Thanks,
Kenny

I'm not sure of what the perfect book would be to recommend to you but, you can start here with this link that will give you lots of good basic information on machine maintenance, hook ups, choosing tapes and other issues.

At that site you can also join and ask additional questions where I moderate the TASCAM Analog Forum.

See ya over there!

Cheers! :)
