I have really regretted not grabbing one of those when MF was selling them for 99 bucks.

Was that with the cabinet as well??!!

I think you can still get the head at that price...no brainer really when read the reviews...hopefully itll be apartment friendly

Gonna get an orange micro terror and cab next...

it was just a head.

Ok, so lets say your budget is around $500...i don't know if you've posted a budget yet.

IMO most of the brand new stuff in that range isn't going to be great. The nighttrain is ok, the epi is ok (highly modable, and loads of fun to work with, but stock nothing too special).

I'd go the used route for sure. If you have a craigslist or something similar, you can grab a decent 1x12 (maybe somekind of vintage 30ish speaker...or similiar quality) for around $150. You can find tiny terrors for around $300 used. That'd be a great combination for $450. Old SF fenders can be found for under $500 sometimes. A DRRI is a good find in that range too. The peavey club something (i forget the name exactly) is great, and carvin has a 50w that I've seen used for around $500 that is also super cool (maybe someone can help me with the names). But, that's what I'd be looking for in the $500 range.

I would skip pretty much anything lower than $500 because it's mostly not that great, and you'll find yourself wanting something more in the near future.

oh, and if you like the micro terror, you can always get a nice used 1x12 to go with it. Used is cool because you can test it, then if you don't like it later on sell it for about the same price you bought it for and try something else.

Im thinking Ill get the cabinet with it, the Kustom has a 1 x 12 but its 16 ohms and the terrors 4 ohms...Ive tried the orange amps in Amplitube and Ive liked them, so this will prolly be fine...(Ive tried them in guitars rig and line 6 and they were awful, but as far as Ive read these models dont come close to how a real orange sounds whereas the IK one does)...anyway $250, cant go wrong :)

what about the jet city pico??

Im thinking Im going to have a micro stack collection and pretend Im a giant lol

KC, the amplitube orange stuff is pretty good. I use a rockerverb 50 and tiny terror and they sound a lot like the real thing recorded. I the cabinets are hit and miss in Amplitube, but the amps are great.

Im very impressed by them too...worth getting the free version and just buying these in the custom shop...I have "orange" amps in GR, Pod Farm, and in a zoom and theyre all pretty shit tbh

Wow interesting stuff Dave...if you ave any recommendations Id love to hear them...as i say this is all new to me

My recommendation would be to stick to normal audio valves (pentodes are a very negleted area, only really one, the EF86).

And buy Merlin Blencowes book: Designing Tube Preamps for Guitar and Bass. Enough variation there with just 83's,82's and EF86's to keep you busy till Christmas 2013!

Oh! And don't pay silly money for "specials" or any of that frozen bollox.

Dave.

Haha didn't scare me back to solid state, just been busy. I researched a couple cabs here and there and I'm thinking I want a twelve inch. I've been looking at a jet city jca12s seems to be getting good reviews, well made and has an eminence speaker in it. Played a tiny terror this week and that along with the good reviews I'm leaning tword a
Micro terror, which I know is hybrid but I'm really diggin the orange sound.

If you're looking for a low watt tube amp, try the Egnater Tweaker 15w. I bought one a couple/few weeks ago, & I'm still amazed at how good this little amp sounds. Running it through a 1x12 Greenback cab, it's awesome. Fender-ish cleans, Marshall-ish crunch/drive, & can even do metal with a boost pedal. Best $400 I ever spent on gear. Another plus is you can use pretty much any tube in the power section (It comes stock with 6V6's, but you can use EL34's for example). I'm planning on buying a couple sets of 6P3S's (Russian made), as I've heard these tubes really make this amp shine. The only setting I don't think sounds convinving enough is the AC/Vox tonestack, it's ok, but not as good as the Marshall (Brit) or the Fender (USA).

Of course, it's only 15 watts, but it is pretty loud for such a small amp. I can say if you're looking for the Marshall "roar" (just like Greg mentioned), buy one of the 50 or 100 watt Marshalls & be done with it. While I'd love to have one, it just isn't gonna happen here at home. The Tweaker is plenty loud for what I do, & one of the 50/100w beasts would be overkill for my use, I'd never be able to appreciate/use the power tubes being pushed on a 50/100w amp, so the Tweaker works for me, YMMV.....

oh yeah, those egnators are nice. i've never used the tweaker, but i've used the rebel 20(?) and it sounds really really nice.

different strokes I guess.
I've played thru several Egnaters (not the Tweaker though) and I found them kinda bland sounding. They were ok but not very exciting.
