one of my balls dangles longer than the other so unless im playing standing on a slope it looks odd :D

Most great guitarists have some sort of physical deformity. I'm perfect, that's why I suck.

Yeah i read somewhere its actually kicking out 16 watts of sound,
can't be ..... it only has 1 el84 in it. Takes 2 of 'em to get up to 18 watts.

And it does have a preamp ..... just no tone control. But it has a 12ax7 for a front end.
I dunno why it would seem so much louder. What are your other 5 watt amps? And is that Vox a solid state? If so ..... then this is just an example of how much louder tubes seem to be.
My TT is 15 watts and it'll keep up with a band easily up to medium volumes.

Yup the vox is solid state...so are my other two amps, so yeah...tube amps are louder ;)

Had a good play with it last night...im sure i say it with every bit of new gear, but its the best $ ive spent in a while...in fact i cant remember the last time i was disappointed in a piece of gear, good times :)

Hey Petshop, what you been buying noo? :)

Lol, they let you back in, HR has no class, least I had the decency to break in ya grovelling shitebag. :D

I think you can get more than 18 watts from one EL84 if you run the plate voltage high. That's what the Diamond guys told me anyway when I was talking to them about that Assassin head I had. Maybe I misunderstood them.

Ooooo! I very much doubt that! Maybe they were thinking of an EL34? That will give you a clean 10 watts with a good enough op traff and so I am sure it could be hotrodded to 15-20watts or so. Bet it sounds shit tho!

Dave.

I dunno. My little Diamond had two EL84s. It was rated at 18 watts, but the actual power output was estimated at like 29 or something like that. It didn't sound like shit, but it wasn't the exact sound I was looking for. It was certainly loud as fuck.

According to the EL84 wiki page, one EL84 is capable of 17 watts at it's nominal max plate voltage.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EL84

"In common with all 'E' prefix tubes, using the Mullard-Philips tube designation, it has a heater voltage of 6.3V. It is capable, when used at its plate rating of 300 volts maximum, of producing 17 watts output in Class AB1 in push-pull configuration. Many guitar amplifiers routinely run EL84 tubes in excess of 400VDC, with the Traynor Guitarmate reportedly putting out 25w RMS with 2 EL84's in a push pull configuration and a B+ between 400-420VDC"

I admittedly don't really know anything about this shit though. Maybe I'm misunderstanding it. I can measure and set my own bias, and beyond that I know enough to electrocute myself. :D

No sir, hoist by your own extract.."It is capable, when used at its plate rating of 300 volts maximum, of producing 17 watts output in Class AB1 in push-pull configuration".

That's TWO valves in push-pull.

Dave.

I've never played a 2xEL84 amp that sounded as quiet as the rating would suggest (not that 18w is quiet by any means). I have a 22w Deluxe Reverb (6L6), and a 40w Hot Rod Deluxe (6L6)...my 18w Maz 18 (EL84) is WAY louder than both of them. I'm not electronics wizard, but EL84s seem to be double the rating they say.

nah ..... two of 'em'll only put out around 18 watts.
Some of that perceived volume level might be the speaker which can have dramatically different efficiencies.

Also the frequency response can affect how loud an amp is perceived to be. An amp that has a lotta mids will be subjectively louder than one that doesn't because of how our ears hear.

Plus the difference between 18 and 22 watts is basically none and a 40 watt amp isn't actually that much louder.

Don't forget ..... to double the volume takes around 10x the power, all other things being equal.

As far as what el84's can put out ...... that is very much an unchangeble fact. They will only put out just so much ...... I have seen a few el84 push-pull amps that are rated at around 20 watts but that's about the limit.

I think those Maz 18's are bad ass! And yeah, they're (seemingly) loud as hell. Expensive too.

at least part of an amp that seems louder than another at the same power levels has to do with the power supply.
The attack of a guitar (transients) can require a greater than rated power for a few mili-seconds.
Say you have a 20 watt amp ...... a sharp transient could use up 50 watts or more for a very brief moment.
If an amp has a power supply that won't let it do that for even a moment, it will not sound as loud as an amp that has a very robust power supply that will allow it.
Those transients can have an effect on how loud we perceive an amp to be.
