Hey all, so ive spent a lot of time on this forum and got sooo much great help from all of you. before this forum i was recording on audacity with a c10u usb microphone and a steadman proscreen pop filter and a laptop. that was ALL my equipment. So this is what i am planning to order soon. i am still a beginner and have never done this before. i think i have the major things but there might be some gaps that i might have missed ie. cords and stuff.

MXL V67G Large Capsule Condenser Microphone
Shock Mount
Mic Stand
M-Audio Fast Track Pro
Steadman Proscreen XL pop filter
Reaper (for recording)

a couple questions.
does the above arrangement seem sound?(no pun intended)
and i missing anything? Do i need any other cords besides the ones that come with the mic and fast track? thank you all for your help

I suppose you have the basics for capturing sound right there - your next investments should be getting some decent monitoring. You will need some studio monitors and a set of headphones. If you plan on doing any programming get a MIDI keyboard as well so you can record virtual instrument tracks.

The only cable you need that might not come with the mic or interface is an XLR cable to connect the mic to the interface. It is possible it will come with the mic, but if it doesn't be prepared to go out and buy one before you can use your microphone.

When i monitor myself, where do i plug in the headphones? in the past i hooked it up to my computer speakers. also, i experienced like a .5 second delay when i turn on monitoring on reaper. how do i fix that?

awesome. im so excited. i actually had to pay my bills recently and looks like my equipment purchase will be set back a couple of of weeks but im really looking forward to it. thanks a lot for your help

do you guys have any studio monitors that you would recommend
im hoping to be in the under 200 price range or maybe a decent pair of headphones to monitor with.

If you're going to be in the $200's it's best to just use some nice monitoring headphones. Monitors don't get decent until at least $300. However, if you really wanted to get some monitors for $200, then the M-Audio Studiophile AV40's would probably be your best bet.

Hey guys below are two links for the mxl v67g from musicialsfriend and 8thstreet

the thing im wondering about it why the prices are so different.
are they the exact same product?

No two completely different microphones note the ending letters ..... g and i
Go to the MXL web site and view all of there models.

Yeah that threw me the first time I had seen that as well. I think there is even a third one in that line that has a similar model name. ;)
But the V67g is a pretty good bang for the buck microphone. You should check out their 2003a as well. If you need to know more about it use the search button in the microphone forum there is a lot of talk about it.

if your room is not treated you might want to pick up a couple of blankets or so too.. :)
I picked up like 5 blankets for like $20, they seem to do the job pretty decent till i get a place where i can put in real acoustic foam.

Good luck with the project :)

Also remember that the fast track pro is an audio interface, so in order to use it you need to switch off your computers soundcard and enable the fast track pro instead, its easily done in the control panel :)

If you're going to be in the $200's it's best to just use some nice monitoring headphones.

The AKG K-240 MkIIs are a good under-$200 value in headphones. They retail for $199, but I got mine brand new on Ebay for $129.

there are 2 links to the mxl v67g microphone
they both look different, specifically the mesh and the color.

are they the exact same microphone? the first one looks so much cooler XD

Ahhh, Musician's Friend WOULD slash $20 off the price 3 months after I order it :o

Those links appear to be for the same mic. Good mic. I've been very pleased with the results I've gotten.

im debating whether i should get to one on musicialsfriend or pay $10 more for the one i find more aesthetically pleasing, although the one on musiciansfriend one comes with a free pencil mic.

also another question for you pros out there. what kind of equipment do I need to get to have a mic that hangs from the ceiling?

in the past i had a metal pole with hooks on each end. One end hung to a pipe on the ceiling and my microphone cord was wrapped around the other end. the pop filter hooked onto the pole. XD
