Trying to figure out this problem!!!

I picked up an older refurbished PC for just over 100 bucks, and I installed Audacity which works fine. For some reason the sound card, (some kind of Soundblaster / pro or similar) will only pick up audio from my mixer (mic + keyboard) when the audio has peaked... and it sounds horrible. I can't get it to record correctly

Is there something I don't know about?

I replaced the old card with a Sound Blaster Live 5.1, works fine now. Waiting for my Ensoniq ESQ-1, and Casio SK-1 synths/keyboards to arrive.
