Howdy, gang. I've posted something a little different for our band (some moody moments blended with our normal style) and I'd like your thoughts and feedback.

The track is called "Breathe" and you can find it at http://www.mp3.com/30SoS. Please let me know your opinions and suggestions on the mix, arrangement, song, performances, etc. Thanks!

wow.......wow!! This is one nice sounding recording!

that bass with that little delay sounds really cool (there is delay, right?) and the use of special effects is cool, too. Reminds me of the metal bands in early-mid 90's.

that vocal scream is good, too. Kinda wish it could be a little heavier by dubbing it, or louder delays.

anyway, this is a really good soundsing recording/mix

Hey!

Long time since I saw one of your songs in here. Still playing Jackson PS4?

ok.. Breathe.. Sounds very good.. even better than how I remember your other songs did. Hmm.. maybe a tad louder drums would be nice.. maybe...

Very nice sound, tight good playing and a good song.

Very nice cut, I really enjoyed the way the buildup led to that killer guitar riff coming out of nowhere.

Excellent job.

Killer song... excellent recording..
To my novice ears everything sounds perfect, nothing really struck me as needing change...
If I had to pick something, I would agree with A1A2 that the "breathe" scream could be a bit heavier...

Awesome!

:)

Hey, everyone. Thanks for listening and posting!

A1A2 -- Glad you liked it. There's not really any delay on the bass, I think it's just the way the part goes (there are some 'ghost' notes and backbeats in the way it's played). I normally avoid that much verb and delay on the vox, but I felt it was justified in this case -- glad I'm not alone :) And there are actually multiple vox on the scream, but I have a tendency of picking a main one and under mixing the rest. I may try and bumps those up a bit...

Meshuggah -- Good to hear from you again. Yeah, I ducked out of the BBS for a bit to work on some of new tunes (and try and get some fresh ears outside of the studio as well). I did post the tune "Evolving" a couple months ago though. If you get the chance, check it out -- it's one of my favorite mixes to date. This is still with the P4, but I just bought an ESP EC300 which I may be phasing into my recordings -- you'll have to let me know if it works... ;) And yes, I started mixing the gtrs much louder (which seems to make our sound heavier) but I'm walking a fine line in squashing the drums...

Khompewtur -- Thanks for the comments. I actually have a couple different version of this track with different guitar riffs behind the "breathe". I may post some of the others sometime to get your guys opinions (the one currently posted won by majority).

Kelly5150 -- Glad you liked the song as well as the mix. I need to go back and listen to the 'breathe' to see what I can do to make it pop a little more...

Any other opinions and suggestions are welcome and appreciated... Thanks!

Very good recording. Powerful guitars. Cool song. Nice riff in the chorus. Tight harmonies.

Some clicks at :32-:34. Maybe a little pitchiness there too.

The vocals in the verses were a little difficult to hear. I'd bring them up a small bit.

Thanks, TripleM. Glad that everyone seems to like the riff in the chorus. It wasn't my pick and I was kind of unsure about it, but it seems to be going over well...

Good catch with the clicks. It's actually me over-enunciating the "K" in "walk" (which is repeated by the delay). Is there a way for me to filter that out without retracking the vocal?

And I agree that the vrs vox can be a little hard to hear. I had a tough time finding a place for them where they were clearly audible, but not over-powering in that otherwise quiet section...

Great tips, TripleM! Everyone else, feel free to keep them coming...

Boy I wish there was. I hate finding stuff like that after the session.

However because it's a vocal and you don't have to worry about getting a guitar to sound exactly like it did originally, I wonder if you could fix it with a punch-in.

Regarding the vocs being hard to hear in some places - ride the fader on every word/phrase if you can.

By the way - great guitar sound!

TripleM -- Since I'm using Sonar, I'm sure I could punch in that word or phrase. We'll see how motivated I am in terms of retracking this tune... ;)

Skids -- Thanks for the post. Glad you like the guitar tone -- the POD 2.0 has treated me well... I can't really 'ride the slider' with Sonar, but if I opt to retrack the vox to get rid of the click, I'll probably try to even it out with some volume envelopes.

Any other thoughts or suggestions on this track?

J
