I'll take a bunch of budget pres in a really well-treated accoustic space for both tracking and mixing over your neve 1073 in a crappy-sounding room with tons of early reflections and funky bass response. That's really the point I'm trying to make. Don't take me so literally.
 
Absorption and Isolation

While were talking about the need to treat rooms in order to get the most out of good monitors and high quality rack gear, someone should mention the other side of the two-headed beast of recording doom: Sound isolation. There is nothing like recording into an expensive large diaphram condenser mic and hearing the phone ring, the dog bark, or the air conditioner compressor turn on. And, sadly enough, all the bass traps and studio foam in the world won't help you when the UPS truck rumbles down your street to deliver the new $1,075 preamp you just bought from Mercenary Audio. There are some solutions (like mounting your air conditioner on isolation pads!) but they are often expensive (has anyone ever priced sheetblock or paid the freight charge to have it delivered!). You could also work primarily with electronic instruments, synthesizers, drum loops, etc., but there is nothing quite like using a fine mic on a fine insrtument or vintage amp. Oh well! So it goes.

Throw $$$ at the problem like a man. Pansy stupid foam and fiberglass is like a salad for lunch. We need the beef. $1000 pres and mics ARE the beef. I say spend until you run out of $$ and save up again. Then spend some more. Racks of high end equipment will always sound (and look) better than a perfect acoustical room. Besides, you can always fix it in the mix.

My .02 worth in a nutshell.

Then you'll still end up with crap! Because your cheap ass pre's wont even begin to capture the subtle nuances of the treated room. Like I said, its only ONE part of the equation. You need to address all parts.

What little it does capture would be a hell of a lot better than an ultra-accurate pre picking up all the subtle nuances of a shitty room.

Ok, I'll jump in! Real men don't eat beef or salad they go to Home Depot and buy sheets of Homasote (SoundBarrier) and spend their days screwing it against newly framed studs!

After visiting Blue Bear's studio a few weeks ago I have to echo Chessrock's comments.

Bruce and I were conversing as we walked between his live room, semi live room, and vocal room. The difference in reflected sound in each room was incredible. The space really does make a difference.

I used to think the answer to getting a better acoustic guitar sound was to throw away my Oktava MC-12s and replace them with something pricier, but now I'm convinced that I need to look into either (a) building a small treated room, or (b) building some gobos similar to C7's.
