SwanSong said:Rwiess, I understand what you are saying I guess. But what I am saying is that, if you stripped Travis Barker of his double bass pedal, and all that, if you stuck him on the seat of John Bonhams drums, and John Bonham were alive, first of all let me just say, Travis right foot isn't quicker than Bonhams, <-Fact. He couldn't keep the speed up that Bonham could. Take away Bonhams right foot, and what do you have? An incredibly awesome drummer! Since 1964 he has been a huge innovator, since he first played a Drum solo with his BARE hands, no sticks, in 1964. He had great feel for a song. He established a mood, he had swing, drama and a lot of other factors that are kind of subconscious to a listener. Travis Barker may have that, but he doesn't implore it on the Blink records. Everyone says that he has great drumming on "Adams Song" or something like that, well that's all very well that he does good drumming on THAT song. Bonham did that 100% of the time.
You also bring up that "Travis is what... 25 years old? " Fantastic for Travis that he is 25, when the first Led Zeppelin album came out, which features his infamous right foot triplet, John Bonham was 20. That very same year when the second album, that revealed his 'Moby Dick' came out he had turned 21. And I don't base my opinion off of one drum solo from Travis, I have heard 3. Even if I did, the first one I heard from Bonham was amazing, as was everyone after that.
When I listen to Led Zeppelin recordings, or John Bonham, I still think, " Wow, that was a really, really keen idea. That was great! ", multiple times within one song. When I hear Travis Barker i say, " wow I'm glad I heard that so I don't accidentally do it one day. "
Maybe we are rating speed and endurance on two totally different scales here. When I think of speed and endurance, I for some reason think of 3 and a half hour shows, 25 or 30 minute drum solos within those shows, and 45 minute songs, that never let you down.
The whole point of this is, I'm not saying "Travis Barker sucks", "Travis Barker is shit", or any of that. But to say he is better than anyone, well, I don't know what to say except that it's false.
Jblount said:Whats sad is my 17 year old cousin thinks Barker is the best drummer in the whole world, and won't even listen to reason. The worst thing is that just about every kid at his school who is tied to drumming in some way shares his opinion. I guess I am just pissed off that Elvin died yesterday, and all these young drummers don't have a clue about his music. It's like 1984, only Big Brother is the record labels. They tell kids what to like and dislike, and they watch them all the time. I think I will turn off the tv for a while!
Speaking of Jazz drummers look up travis Barkers Background he was trained in Many genre's including jazz, been playing since he was 4, got serious at 12 years old. And he show's all the training in a lot of his drumming, just pay attenion.SG1965 said:he is better than average, but he is overratted. the music he plays lends itself for the sloppy dynamics he does. The great drummers, like Neil Peart and jazz drummers dont just gocrazy with dynamics, they make everything sound clean. Same with guitar. Jazz guitarists use no distortion, and make everything clean. Overrated rock guitarists like Kirk Hammet just play a scale with tremelo picking and tons of distortion.
I still like playing with lots of dynamics, but that doesnt take that much skilll.
punkrcker32 said:for one if your not a punk don't characterize something you don't know. I am a punk and yes i will call my self one. punk is a music, punk is a life style, punk is punk. you wont be able to understand this until you interact with it. and no matter what people say there is only one version to punk its called "punk rock", its not punk-pop or power punk, what is that shit, thats a persons way of trying to make punk rock mainstream and acceptable, it's what the mainstream music industry people want to call, so it sounsd normal and catchy.and paul from the unseen and jake from the casualties could kick travis barkers ass at endurance. listen to the career soliders, casualties, unseen, f-minus, lowerclass brats, and you'll hear fast drums with a tone of endurance.
Cult_Status02 said:I love you kids. I bet you've got a mohawk, I bet you wear tight plaid pants, I bet you where Doc Martin look alikes. I bet you think you're not "punk" unless you lookn the part. Don't come here putting down the (I admit is shitty) "pop-punk" stuff and then talk up the twice as shitty "fashion" punk bands like the Unseen or Casualties. You know both those bands have played warped tour...which is a Clear Channel affiliate and if you don't know how that makes them hypocrites (almost as big as that joke anti-flag) then you're ignorant. Isn't it wonderful to see a band like the Casualties playing in front of a huge Yoohoo banner? I'll leave it at that, but one thing you should learn is to not say the shit I was saying when I was 10. Give up defending those bands and arguing your point and point of view about "punk." Just fix your side-ways trucker hat and say "it's music." When I listen to music I either like it, it's crap, or I don't like it but they do what they do pretty good. May as well quit defending something that can't be defined.
fenix said:Travis barker could eat those guys when it comes to speed and endurance.
fldrummer said:I think he's one of the best at what he does but not a great overall drummer. Peolpe like Vinnie Colaiuta, steva gadd, dave weckl, steve smith, dennis chambers or anybody like that could eat him for lunch as a overall player. But I do give him props for what he does for the punk world. Whats this about punk w/ a crazy single pedal???? I assume you've never heard any real hip hop drummers. I know some guys that you would sware its a double pedal when their rippin their tight doubles and TRIPLES like theirs no 2maro.
