nobody knows anything about anything. this is all you need to know. it is the first rule.

Yeah you're right. Ignoring these comments could be an asset. "Ignorance is bliss"...I guess.

For the last time: the drummer from NOFX DOESN'T use a double-pedal.
It's heel-toe technique. Watch a live vid or a pic and you'll see...
Iron Cobra single pedal.

Well, once again, i think Travis is a great drummer, i just dont like Blink-182 all too much...

As far as other drummers go, one of my favorites for this month would have to be Derek Roddy. He plays in a Death Metal band, Hate Eternal. I had the optunity to talk to him and check out his sound checks and main preformance from back stage in one of my other bands whose name ill keep to myself.

You wont see any heal-toe kicking from his guy, hes strait up ankles only, all single strokes with his hands too.. pretty neat to watch.

Here is a "Solo" from his Instructional video that he recorded himself hehe..

Most of it i beleive is just a Hate Eternal song that he is playing, but he does a little but of other stuff. If you think Travis is the best out there becuase of his speed and energy hes got nothing on this guy(as far as that goes)... Death Metal Blasts with just ONE foot on the bass drum..

Anywho its just the end of his instructional video so the last two minutes are him talking and credits, hope you enjoy...

PS: Its 75 megs, if my bandwidth starts to go away really really fast ima take it down, so try and keep it to just us Homerecording.com people.. Thanks!

you can all like him a little more now hes not playing with blink anymore.

*hangs self*

WTF Travis Barker with Double Bass

Rwiess, I understand what you are saying I guess. But what I am saying is that, if you stripped Travis Barker of his double bass pedal, and all that, if you stuck him on the seat of John Bonhams drums, and John Bonham were alive, first of all let me just say, Travis right foot isn't quicker than Bonhams, <-Fact. He couldn't keep the speed up that Bonham could. Take away Bonhams right foot, and what do you have? An incredibly awesome drummer! Since 1964 he has been a huge innovator, since he first played a Drum solo with his BARE hands, no sticks, in 1964. He had great feel for a song. He established a mood, he had swing, drama and a lot of other factors that are kind of subconscious to a listener. Travis Barker may have that, but he doesn't implore it on the Blink records. Everyone says that he has great drumming on "Adams Song" or something like that, well that's all very well that he does good drumming on THAT song. Bonham did that 100% of the time.

You also bring up that "Travis is what... 25 years old? " Fantastic for Travis that he is 25, when the first Led Zeppelin album came out, which features his infamous right foot triplet, John Bonham was 20. That very same year when the second album, that revealed his 'Moby Dick' came out he had turned 21. And I don't base my opinion off of one drum solo from Travis, I have heard 3. Even if I did, the first one I heard from Bonham was amazing, as was everyone after that.

When I listen to Led Zeppelin recordings, or John Bonham, I still think, " Wow, that was a really, really keen idea. That was great! ", multiple times within one song. When I hear Travis Barker i say, " wow I'm glad I heard that so I don't accidentally do it one day. "

Maybe we are rating speed and endurance on two totally different scales here. When I think of speed and endurance, I for some reason think of 3 and a half hour shows, 25 or 30 minute drum solos within those shows, and 45 minute songs, that never let you down.

The whole point of this is, I'm not saying "Travis Barker sucks", "Travis Barker is shit", or any of that. But to say he is better than anyone, well, I don't know what to say except that it's false.

Travis barker doesn't play Dble Bass, And Also, Times have changed ppl dont come to a show to watch a 45 min. solo, unless you like slipknot, or something like that, Let me mention i think Joey Jordison suck's because unlike travis Barker, His drumming doesnt go along with the groove of the music. I have to agree with you about the fact that travis is not the best, but still i think he is one of the best these days in punk.... My Fav. Drummers are Travis B., and Mike Portnoy, Neil Pert.........

Whats sad is my 17 year old cousin thinks Barker is the best drummer in the whole world, and won't even listen to reason. The worst thing is that just about every kid at his school who is tied to drumming in some way shares his opinion. I guess I am just pissed off that Elvin died yesterday, and all these young drummers don't have a clue about his music. It's like 1984, only Big Brother is the record labels. They tell kids what to like and dislike, and they watch them all the time. I think I will turn off the tv for a while!

BUMP!

Elvin Jones RIP.

I have seen Elvin Jones play live multiple times. My playing is styled after that guy. He was and is beautiful.

he is better than average, but he is overratted. the music he plays lends itself for the sloppy dynamics he does. The great drummers, like Neil Peart and jazz drummers dont just gocrazy with dynamics, they make everything sound clean. Same with guitar. Jazz guitarists use no distortion, and make everything clean. Overrated rock guitarists like Kirk Hammet just play a scale with tremelo picking and tons of distortion.
I still like playing with lots of dynamics, but that doesnt take that much skilll.
Speaking of Jazz drummers look up travis Barkers Background he was trained in Many genre's including jazz, been playing since he was 4, got serious at 12 years old. And he show's all the training in a lot of his drumming, just pay attenion.

Blink did hurt his leg and reverse his set and play, i seen it on Tv. He was practicing getting ready for a show and said he had to build up his leg. Maybe for the show your talking about, it might of just happened

I have a few things to say:

First off, I saw Josh Freese (Vandals drummer) live with Nine Inch Nails. He was an amazing drummer, and added his own flavor and fills to usually relatively simple NIN beats. He is an awesome drummer, and considering he has played for lots of people (Sting, NIN, A Perfect Circle, Vandals, Guns and Roses, Dweezil Zappa) I would say he is more versatile then Barker.

Second of all, the NOFX drummer is a dumbass. The double pedal (or double bass) is a very useful tool for adding creativity to your set. Look at Louis Bellson, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, and Billy Cobham... these guys are WAY better than some ass clown "punk" drummer.

Third, doesnt Travis Barker use OCDP? I have yet to hear a good review of those drums. I think that his playing, much like his drums, are overly flashy and arent as good as they are made out to be. Am I as good? Of course not, I suck. But calling this guy a drum god is stretching it. If hes a hero, good for you. John Dolmayan is my hero, and he isnt much better. But I wouldn't call him a drum god. And neither is Travis Barker.

Fourth... punk is not a style. A true punk wouldnt call themself a punk. A true punk wouldnt give a fuck about styles, bands, etc etc etc. Its all bullshit these days.

for one if your not a punk don't characterize something you don't know. I am a punk and yes i will call my self one. punk is a music, punk is a life style, punk is punk. you wont be able to understand this until you interact with it. and no matter what people say there is only one version to punk its called "punk rock", its not punk-pop or power punk, what is that shit, thats a persons way of trying to make punk rock mainstream and acceptable, it's what the mainstream music industry people want to call, so it sounsd normal and catchy.and paul from the unseen and jake from the casualties could kick travis barkers ass at endurance. listen to the career soliders, casualties, unseen, f-minus, lowerclass brats, and you'll hear fast drums with a tone of endurance.

I am both a guitar player and a drummer and enjoy Gadd, Colaiuta, Smith, Peart, Phillips, etc., but this sounds a lot like the joke "how many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb?"...."10....1 to do it and 9 to go I can do that" I watched the Travis Barker video and they guy is no slouch. If a guy can groove, play tastefully, and be wild sometimes I think that's cool.

I don't really like Barker's style and don't consider him the best, but then again that's my opinion... Punk drummers that I truly respect would be Jordan Burns (I can't believe barker was rated better than him)... Lagwagon's always had awesome drums especially on Trashed.... and definitely SickTrick's drummer... just plain CRAZY! http://www.myspace.com/sicktrick

I love you kids. I bet you've got a mohawk, I bet you wear tight plaid pants, I bet you where Doc Martin look alikes. I bet you think you're not "punk" unless you lookn the part. Don't come here putting down the (I admit is shitty) "pop-punk" stuff and then talk up the twice as shitty "fashion" punk bands like the Unseen or Casualties. You know both those bands have played warped tour...which is a Clear Channel affiliate and if you don't know how that makes them hypocrites (almost as big as that joke anti-flag) then you're ignorant. Isn't it wonderful to see a band like the Casualties playing in front of a huge Yoohoo banner? I'll leave it at that, but one thing you should learn is to not say the shit I was saying when I was 10. Give up defending those bands and arguing your point and point of view about "punk." Just fix your side-ways trucker hat and say "it's music." When I listen to music I either like it, it's crap, or I don't like it but they do what they do pretty good. May as well quit defending something that can't be defined.

acctuly i dont think to be a punk you have to dress punk, thats a personal choice. i dont have a hawk,i do wear plaids and tight jeans but that is just my personal choice. i dont smoke, drink or do drugs. punk is a lifestyle, you dont care about money or fast expensive cars, you dont sit on your ass and let other people boss you around or figure stuff out for you, you get up make a difference in the community, you stand up for what you belive in and you dont let other people rule your life or make decisons for you. ya i agree anti-flag is a fucking joke, and ya so what the unseen and casualties have played wapred tour, that doesnt mean their sell outs or some how not punk anymore, it just means they love playing the tour.

Travis barker could eat those guys when it comes to speed and endurance.

THAT´s FUNNY! Man, seriously, you have NO idea what are u talking about... You should go back and listen to a lot of the music made in late 80s/early 90s by those cats before saying something like that... (btw, if you ask Travis about, he´ll tell you that he´s WAY behind Vinnie, Dave, Dennis...)

I think he's one of the best at what he does but not a great overall drummer. Peolpe like Vinnie Colaiuta, steva gadd, dave weckl, steve smith, dennis chambers or anybody like that could eat him for lunch as a overall player. But I do give him props for what he does for the punk world. Whats this about punk w/ a crazy single pedal???? I assume you've never heard any real hip hop drummers. I know some guys that you would sware its a double pedal when their rippin their tight doubles and TRIPLES like theirs no 2maro.

what about the stuff dave grohl came up with on that queens of the stone age album songs for the deaf? pretty fast single pedal work there too. Its one of my favorite albums.

Why does this thread keep coming back??

Why won't it just go away?? :( :( :(
