I agree, Travis is a good drummer. Of course people know him, he's mainstream. I don't think people will truly appreciate great drummers such as Steve Gadd or Dennis Chambers or even Tony Royster Jr. unless they are mainstream. IMO, these guys will wipe the floor with Barker, no questions asked.

Tony Royster Jr. Might of been able to beat him when he was 12, seriously. I'm not trying to bag travis or anything it's just that just because he can came up with some decent grooves, has some chops, and about everybody between 10 and 30 have watched him go all at it in the "main stream" might make him more popular then gadd or vinnie but in no way possiable have more technique / skill / chops / bla bla bla....

Tony is impressive, but he needs to get with a real band or something. That cheesy synth crap accompanying him is painful.

LOL! Oh man... I know what you mean!! Dennis Chambers is accompanied by the same thing in some, or should I say MOST, of his videos. No disrespect to his grooves though... :)

a lot of "punk rock" bands do crazy shit with one pedal. check out nofx and strung out. i'm pretty sure they use one pedal.

check out strung out - velvet alley...nutty song for the drums...(but then again i dont kno much bout drums)

Eric from NOFX uses a double-kick pedal...

Lagwagon and Propaghandi have pretty phenominal drummers as well.

does the nofx drummer actually use it for the fast beat tho? i kno the strung out drummer has one but he only uses it for fills

For real. I think he's the only reason behind Blink 182s popularity. Did you really think it was all about the "power chords," lol! Travis is one of my fav cause he's not your everyday drummer. One of my all-time favs is Carter Beauford. Now that guy is just sick!
People like them because they write good songs. Nobody gives a shit about the drums or how simple power chords are. Only the "mean girls" of the music world gossip like that.

Write good songs? You must mean catchy songs, cause there's a difference. Don't get me wrong, I like Blink 182, but ask any real musician, Blink has only a few "good" songs. Prime example of a horrible song... their song "First Date." When I read/heard the lyrics, that was the stupidest song I've ever listened too. However... it was "catchy" and that is what drew people to it. Look at all these other bands just like Blink (NFG/Simple Plan/NOFX/Yellowcard). They've got catchy songs... but why are they not as popular as Blink? That is where this thread comes into the picture. Branded asked what we thought of Travis. IMO, you take away Travis (chops/grooves/everything), you're left with a band similar to the aforementioned. So now we ask... why is Blink so popular over everyone else? I know it's not Tom DeLonge's downstroking... The point is, Travis is the commercial guy in Blink 182, just like Gwen Stefani is in No Doubt. You say "no one gives a shit about the drums" when it comes to songs and that "mean girls" only do the talking. Well... if no one gave a shit, this thread wouldn't be here right now. And also, those mean girls you talk about? It's called opinions buddy... if you got a problem with that... start bashing everyone else on this thread and see what they gotta say. :)

Sorry dudette, "good songs" is the answer. As for those other bands... NOFX is terrible, Yellowcard has no songwriting ability at all, and Simple Plan is just a clever marketing ploy as is New Found Glory. None of them have written songs as good as Mark and Tom, and I doubt they ever will. They all sell records because of the gimmicks they use to market themselves. YC, NFG, and SP all rely on the "pretty boys that can play guitar and be totally rebellious times ten" gimmick, while NOFX spews leftist propaganda all over the place to create the illusion that they are smart or talented.

Sounds like someone has a lot on their mind... I thought this was just about the music, nothing about propaganda or anything like that, lol. Anyways, to me, you sound like a big Blink 182 fan defending their music. Whether that be the case, I go back to your comment of "None of them have written songs as good as Mark and Tom, and I doubt they ever will."

First Date:
"In the car I just can't wait
to pick you up on our very first date
Is it cool if I hold your hand?
Is it wrong if I think it's lame to dance?
Do you like my stupid hair?
Would you guess that I didn't know what to wear?
I'm too scared of what you think
You make me nervous so I really can't eat"

Again, I'm a fan of Blink, but those lyrics... man... looks like a 4th grader penned that song.
I'll get back to the REAL topic of this thread. Travis is good, but nowhere near Colaiuta, Gadd, etc. How would anyone rate Thomas Lang's playing? Recently saw his DVD Creative Control... pretty good.

First of all to set the record straigh Eric Sandin from NOFX doesn't use a double pedal. I've seen him live countless times. He just doen't have one, nor does he need one. He plays doubles and triples using the heel-toe technique.
Same goes for Travis Barker. He's a pretty good drummer (surely not the best) he just happens to play in a shitty but very popular band, altough I think the new Blink record sounds pretty good and there may be a couple decent songs on the previous records. As far as the guy that said that NOFX are terrible and are "spewing leftist propaganda..." well, you obviously must hate punk rock to say something like that. Oh, by the way the new Bad Religion and former Suicidal Tendencies drummer, Brooks Wackerman is also great and so is Josh Freese. Wackerman uses a double but only for "extreme" stuff and sometimes Freese does too. Well, thats all. :)

Most of their songs are pretty catchy, but have you heard any of the new blink album. I am not really a fan of them, but I am pretty impressed with it, if you put the terrible overloud/bad mastering part aside. They really went outside of themselves for it, and a lot of groundbreaking things were done. they were in studios across the country, playing live with each other over a broadband connection. They even do a song with robert smith on the album. As for travis barker's drumming, I would say he could give most a run for their money. I think he's probably underated because he plays in a pop-punk band, but I think his abilities reach far beyond that, we just never get to see or hear it.

Bleh... are you guys kidding? Blink's new album is terrible to the max. None of the songs are good. Its over produced with garbage that they can never play live. Travis Barkface's drumming is too wild and is too distracting in most songs. Blink's songwriting really started to go downhill when Barkface started writing with them. Dude Ranch and Enema of the State is where the magic happened, and it's why they are famous. Too bad they can't reproduce it anymore.

I used to be a huge punk rocker... a very long time ago. I eventually realized how shitty most punk bands are, especially the pretend politcal activist kind like NOFX. Its gotten so bad that I hate punks even more than I hate hippies, which is pretty sad considering how lame hippies are. In fact, I think punks are the new hippies! Congratulations!

Well I'm not a Blink fan but I think the new songs are alot better compared to the old ones, the only "old" song that I like is "Stay Together...". Although I'm no so sure about the production of the new album, I only have some mp3's so I can't really say. Well, do you actually consider "Dude Ranch" and "Enema..." good PUNK albums? Were you a "conservative punk" lol, who thinks that punk rock should be only about fart jokes? OK, let's leave politics to Britney.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Who gives a shit about anything but the music? I'm sick of all these reviews filled with pretentious bullshit that has nothing to do with music in Rollilng Stone and Spin. Here is how I rate albums (everyone should do it like this too):

music sucks

music doesn't suck

This seems to be a very accurate way of reviewing albums. Blink's last 2 albums simply had no good songs on them. The songwriting was simply mediocre. No good guitar riffs, no good melodies. Dude Ranch had quite a few well written songs that have gone down in history as "classic" blink songs. Enema of the State was solid gold from beginning to end, so it isn't suprising that it was the album that made them superstars. The music was just good.

The thing about Travis is he knows what to play, when to play it, and when not to play at all. That's all there is to it.

Whats sad is my 17 year old cousin thinks Barker is the best drummer in the whole world, and won't even listen to reason. The worst thing is that just about every kid at his school who is tied to drumming in some way shares his opinion. I guess I am just pissed off that Elvin died yesterday, and all these young drummers don't have a clue about his music. It's like 1984, only Big Brother is the record labels. They tell kids what to like and dislike, and they watch them all the time. I think I will turn off the tv for a while!

Ummm...I just wanted to comment on the fact that you said that "Blink's songwriting really started to go downhill when Barkface started writing with them" and then you cited Enema of the State as magic. Travis was on that record. So if they went downhill when he joined then how is Enema magic? Now don't get me wrong, I love Enema, and Dude Ranch, but I also think Take off your Pants and Jacket and the new one have some awesome songs, and I think they've grown from their dick and fart joke phase into really good musician's and songwriter's, I just wanted to clearify how Enema was magic if you think Blink's songwriting sucks after Travis joined.

All of the songs on Enema of the State were written my Mark and Tom before Travis ever joined. They even recorded part of it with their old drummer and then recorded the songs all over again after Travis joined.
