Transferring MR8 Tracks.

My brother has an MR8 and, a while back, I had downloaded a free small software program (don't rightly remember its name) which would allow the transferring of his tracks into the computer. Whatever this program was it happened to be problematic - at best - within his efforts to use it for its stated purpose. What would be the absolute best way by which to get his tracks into the computer, for extended work via Sonar? I think I remember him stating that his present manner for transferring files involves moving one track at a time into his computer. There MUST be a much better way to do this, and - hopefully - one that would enable making such a transfer in ONE SHOT - no matter how many tracks were needed to be moved.

Direct Connection using USB or the digital optical thing. I always use USB though. Just open up the F: drive (or whatever drive the MR-8 is assigned to), copy/paste all the tracks, and then paste them into your harddrive.

Thanks Trent. Just by virtue of the fact that Fostex offered the software program, mentioned in my initial post, there was wonder that the USB connection might not allow for what was needed - in the way that it was (and is) needed. But I will tell him to explore that method.

Thanks again.

No problem :)

If he still has problems, direct him to these links (from Fostex.com).

Warning: These are direct links so if you don't want to download it yourself, just copy/paste it for him to use.

Wave Manager for PC allows USB transfers...

Update V1.20 updates software and fixes some bugs and makes a lot of non-compatible memory cards now compatible!

Enjoy :)

Thanks again, Trent ~

I just finished downloading from those two links that you supplied, and am about to burn them to CD for my brother (He's visiting here, from out of town, and does not have internet service). That WavManager is the program that I had downloaded for him before, and maybe there was something wrong with that particular download. But we'll see what happens now.

Thanks much.

Trent, Very helpful of you to link him...

Though I STILL DO NOT believe you are Trent Reznor

I started having issues using the USB/Wave Mgr method with my Laptop as it's running XP... I never had a problem with any computers running 2000.
If he still is running into issues, a USB card reader has fixed the problem for me.... I picked one up off of Ebay that reads cards from my MR8 and my Digital Cam for about 10 bucks...

Always nice to have options

;)

OK - this is probably in the manual somewhere, but how do I tell which version of the software I have. If it pops up on the MR-8 screen, that's probably why I've missed it. Anyway, I'm sure mine's not the latest, but just curious.

Wonder if this is a software bug that is fixed? I tried moving some tracks from my PC back to my MR-8 (new song, card cleared) using the WavManager, and I couldn't get the last track transfered. If I had tracks 1-4 on my PC, and I selected tracks 1-4, only tracks 1-3 would transfer back to my MR-8. I had to copy track 4 and rename it tr05, and then I could transfer tracks 1-4.

The latest software update is 1.2 blah blah blah... It is a fix for cards that were previously on the unsuable list... It also enables auto delete, so you have to download the read me file and follow it to disable the feature if you don't want to auto delete your files.

As far as Wave Manager is concerned, if you don't want to use it, the above suggested route works pretty good:

Connect the MR-8 via usb, then enable usb on the MR-8.

As soon as the record button flashes, go into "My Computer" and select the drive assigned to MR-8 and open it. You will see your tracks listed there as "tr01", tr02", etc without the quotes. Hold down the shift key and select all the tracks you want to transfer, and move them to the folder you want to work with in Sonar.

On caveat, don't go into the folder named "mix2", these are just the backup waves that the MR-8 creates to use the undo/redo feature.

The card reader also works well, but if you don't want to spend money on one, what I have described will work fine.

Assuming you had an appropriately named "folder" on the MR8 to move them to, I think that may be a problem created by transferring tracks from MR8 to PC NOT using wavmanager, then attempting to transfer them back.

The version of your software will flash on the screen sometime shortly after turning the MR8 on, within the first couple of seconds I'm fairly sure.

Rokket - I typically use the WavManager when I'm moving around tracks 1-8. I do use the "external device" via USB as you suggest to get the wav file that you can make on the MR-8 from tracks 7/8. That is under the mix directory. I don't think you can get to the wav file via WavManager, so I use both. Don't think I've seen a mix2 directory. Maybe that's 1.2 firmware only, or I just didn't notice it.

Cellardweller - Well, I don't know if the name for my folder was appriopriate or not - depends on what kind of mood I was in...:) I did use WavManager to move the file both ways. And I tried it a couple of times on a couple different folders for different songs. Who knows - one of those nights maybe...

Thanks...

I really recommmed you go to the Fostex website and get the latest upgrade. I think all your file transfer problems will go out the window.

When you get it, save it on your desktop, go into the MR-8 via usb, open the drive and just drag and drop the upgrade to the drive.

Then restart the MR-8 and let it do its thing. It will automatically upgrade and you can use it after that...

Good luck! :)

Sounds easy enough. Thanks, I'll give it a go - tomorrow :)

As easy as that seems, I couldn't get the upgrade to take.

I unzipped the file I downloaded from Fostex (v1.20) and unzipped. I transfered the unzipped file (mr08_mv1.20) via the USB (drag-and-drop) to top level of CF card. Turned off MR-8 and turned back on while pressing the STOP button. I get an error message saying there is no upgrade file on the CF card. Look on MR-8 via USB connection and verify that the upgrade file is now gone. When I boot up, it still says v1.10.

I did a quick search I did see a post that alluded to:

A) different procedures depending if you used a card reader or USB to move the upgrade file
B) pdf files that came with the zip file from fostex outlining these procedures.

OK - this shouldn't be difficult, I'll be the first to admit. What did I miss?

YES..I found this out the hard way while trying to line up a guitar solo track that was a "punched in" track. I wasn't using the WAV Manager before, it really does make things easier. Plus you can bounce back tracks to the MR8, which is a big plus for adding a track back that is mixed down using effects etc. for overdubs.

It sounds like you did it right, I don't understand what went wrong.

Here is how I did it via usb: I opened the drive letter assigned to the MR-8, dragged the unzipped file to the drive, then closed the drive and exited usb mode in the MR-8. I turned off the machine, and then turned it back on holding the stop button down. It updated with no problem....

OK - that's what I did, though I'm not sure what you mean by "closed the drive." I just hit the stop button to close out the USB connection. I tried again today and still no luck. I can go to my "drive E", which is the card, and I can see that the file is there. Once I turn off the MR-8 and turn it back on, the file is gone. Maybe I'll try the fostex.com forum...

"Close the drive" meant to close the window once you get the file in it. Then hit the stop button on the MR-8....

And make sure you are holding down the stop button as you turn on the MR-8....

Thanks - you actually gave me a hint that got me going. I think I might have been closing down too quickly. I'd go back and the file was gone. So I finally did a copy to the CF card and "walked away" before shutting down. Worked like a charm...
