I recorded a show the other night on my Wollensak - looks like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15000&item=5715660579&rd=1 - I went to my friends yesterday and tried to run it through his 8 track digital mixer through a regular quarter inch guitar wire...it didn't sound that good though when we listened to it through his speakers when it was digital...

What are some things that could improve this?

Is there a better line to use from machine to machine? Is it better to record into a certain type of digital recorder? Please help

I wouldn't expect that a 40 dollar mic into an old reel machine would sound all that great to begin with, especially once you hear it through studio monitors.

Ok, I was using a $39.99 style Sam Ash microphone...I'm at a friends right now, so I don't know the exact line...I used a line that was an average mic line...Then when I transfered it, I just used a standard guitar cable to connect it to a thing like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41479&item=3743488651&rd=1#ebayphotohosting

Ahh, well there's the problem right there. Transfering from magnetic tape to digital will cause some sort of loss simply because of the difference in properties. Things like gold plated cables and higher quality at that, may help, but I won't always solve that problem.

Try re-recording straight into digital. Thats the cheapest way I can think of.

First of all, if you did not use 2 mics to take advantage of the stereo recorder, then you deprived yourself of a world of fidelity.

A guitar cable?!

What kind of output does the tape machine have, and what kind of input does the digital recorder have?

If those two don't match, then there will most likely be issues with hum and other noise.

How does it sound right from the tape machine?
