With Shure Beta 91 how would you record a bass drum? Make a hole or open the skin altogether? Thanks.
get a piece of foam about 2" Thick and at least 12"x12".
Get the kick tuned how you want it, and put the foam on the ground in front of the drum...even touching the head if you want! and lay the mic on that.
You may need to stick something under 1 end of the foam, depending upon what kind of sound that you are after.

I'm for leaving the front head solid....if you are going to cut a hole in it, you might as well just take it all the way off.

Thank you, Tim. That was the suggestion I just needed since I don't really want to cut a hole. Any foam will do I suppose.

Yeah man, I'm not into cutting holes in the front heads.
I use 28" Kick drums with no holes, and I'm back to micing the kicks out in front.

I just never could get "the" kick sound I was after, and it turned out to simply be my selection of Kick mic.

You could just get foam at any bedding or mattress place. They will surely have a little piece that they will sell you for a buck or two...you know, something the screwed up.

Even better, would be to have them make you a foam "donut" about 20"x20" in diameter...like a foam "tube" that you could stick in front of the kick like a tunnel.

That will REALLY make your kick sound killer, because it wil give you a little distance between the drum and the mic, but help keep the cymbals and other drums out of the kick mic.
