Tracking heavy distortion...

I have always had good luck with a single 57 and a room mic, but I usually don't use the room mic if I have a crappy room. So most of the time I end up with a single 57 on the best speaker with a moderate volume, making sure that the amp sounds great at ear level to the speaker. I know that in a couple cases we have had amps sound great when you stand next to it, but when you get right next to the cabinet you hear tons of highs and mids that you simply could not hear. Raising the height of the amp might be a good way to make sure that you are getting a realistic recording. I think you should be able to do well with a 57 however.
