Tracking a Singing Drummer???

I saw the Eagles maybe 6 to 8 years back. Their vocals were awesome .... old and lame though they may be.

I can imagine it might work with the Eagles. Don Henley barely even plays. I think he uses chopsticks for drumsticks.

I do have to comment on something really stupid about the Eagles mix.

Wifey and I saw them that first tour when they were doing smaller venues .... the place we saw them in only held maybe 8000.
Anyways ...... they had some sort of hip-hop mixing engineer or something because the kick drum was this WAY bloated over-powering booming kick that completely and totally drowned out everything else whenever they were doing anything with a full kit.
The bass player may as well not even played when the kick was happening.
You could hear the vocals but nothing else except kick. All the other instruments were buried under this super sized kick drum! It was really and truly stupid.

On the acoustic stuff everything was fine but as soon as the drums fired up ...... boom boom boom boom was all you heard.
:laughings:

Wifey told me I should go tell the mix engineer! :D

Sure ...... he's gonna listen to some dude from the audience! :laughings:

But it was about the dumbest thing I ever heard from a big name bands' mix.

Oh I don't think so, this only happens to bands that can't play live.
Unfortunately, it became such a widespread practice for a bands' live album recordings to be touched up in the studio after the event that it's become almost impossible outside of jazz not to be cynical about live albums. Thin Lizzy were a dynamic live band in the mid 70s but the doctoring of "Live and dangerous" just put the kibosh on it all for me.

To the OP, if this band is so used to doing their songs this way, why not make the drummer's vocals keepers ?

It's funny that this thread has gone this direction. One of the arguments that this band brought up a few times was that live albums/DVDs sound fine with singing drummers... Going down the road of trying to explain overdubs on live albums would probably get me nowhere. So we'll try a 57 poking through a hole in a 2"x10"x10" foam pad and ask that he not sing full volume. I'll also have to keep him from "one more time" and "go man go" type stuff... it'll be fun regardless, and they've already paid me for the tracking day :)

I agree. I'm suspicious of any live album that sounds good.

The first Beatles album was recorded live? I know there was no singing drummer however.

So when I look at Rush playing live it was overdubbed? Get a life.

Alan.

P.S found another one, check it out at 0.58 sec, however the roadie moves the mic in and out of position (see it at 2.14), he would have the know the songs very well.

Lol. You're a moron. Hey, if you believe everything that's put in front of you, then rock on.

If the shit fits, wear it. :)

Don't worry, I have already realised that there is no need to listen to any thing you say. People just have to go through and read your other answers in other threads.:spank:

Sure thing. Whatever you say pops. I'm sure you're the go-to guy when someone wants to sound dated and old. If i come across anyone like that, I'll sends em your way.
