track 8 on 488

Hello everyone. I am using a 488 MKII that I got off ebay, and track 8 is recording very quietly. I was wondering if this has anything to do with the midi sync feature, or if the track is just blown. Also, the thing didn't come with a manual. How do you record a new track without getting the existing mix on the track with it? Thanks for your help.

Hi,...

1) Make sure the dbx switch is in the "On" position, not "Off" or "Sync".

2) Use the Tape Cue section to listen back to previous tracks while overdubbing, leaving the Main Mix section for inputs.

Don't know about the 488 but my 238's have a filter switch for track 8 if you're striping it with time code. If it has one, make sure it's off.

That's what the dbx/Sync switch does.

When this switch is in the "Sync" position, it defeats dbx NR on track 8 and removes track 8's audio from the signal chain. It's to accommodate recording timecode on track 8. This switch should be in the "On" position for normal recording.

Congrats on the 488. I still have and use one that I bought new in 1991. They are sweet machines.
