Track 3 Really Loud

Okay, I'm trying to record something on the third track of my Fostex FD-4 but when I hook the mic up it is really really loud. I tried changing the level switches, the ones down by the channel faders but it only makes slight differances. Please help.

JM,

On the monitor switch, which setting are you using L/R L/R+MON or MON? It makes a difference in the volumes because only the L/R setting works directly off the faders. The others use the master mon volume.

things are really loud no matter how I set them. Also when I unhook whatever I had in there I get alot of hiss. It almost seems like there is a mic inside of the four track or soemthing because when I, say, tap on it I can hear it through the headphones. Really weird

I hate to say it but, it sounds like something that is definately picking up sound. Did you call Fostex. You may have to send the unit in. Bummer.....do let us know what is causing the problem. Do you still get any of that internal sound if you turn track 3 off?
