I am wondering if anyone knows of a free program for home recording/mixing..like the one offered on this site that WILL work with microsoft xp....here or elsewhere on the web.....

depends on what you mean by 'free'...

Totally free?
Free trial?
Free-ly receiving a copy via internet/burned cd?

Your not gonna get anything good, legally, for free.

One more thought,

With some ingenuity you can use Microsoft Sound Recorder. I used it for the recording/mixing of instrument tracks and it worked pretty damn good. Take the length of what you want to record and add like up to a minute or so, record that amount of times worth of dead air (need 5 minutes of recording time? record 6 minutes of dead air) This will get you past the 1 minute intervals. You can also adjust volume levels, cut and splice with the program. So simple, yet so many possibilites!
