hey thanks for listening!
it cuts off abruptly at the end (if you made it that far) because it's part of an album which is pretty much one continuous piece.
also, although none of the instruments are individually mixable any more, i'm still playing with the EQ so let me know if there's anything you'd change.

Sounds very spirited and into the groove.

Was it recorded live?

I would bring the vocal up if you could eq it. It sounds kind of middy/muddy at times which I think is mostly the guitar sound. Have you tried putting a multiband limiter/compressor across the mix? They can sometimes change the mix quite effectively,

btw is Tales from topographic reference cos you like it?)

^^^ TFTO is a pretty notable album in it's own right if partially because (for alot of people) it symbolizes the biggest excesses of that era of prog. As for whether I like it, my answer would be longer than i feel it's appropriate to post right now. the aesthetics of that era of rock, i think, has something in common with what we were trying to do with these songs (long songs, meandering psychedelic passages). that's why i thought the "album title" worked as a joke.
as for the feel of the songs, they were mostly improvised to cassette 4-track (guit, bass, drums, + keys). we took the best of the best and things that seemed to go well together, mixed them to ProTools, and then wrote and overdubbed additional parts, vocals, and noises. all the improvisation gave it, i think, a pretty loose organic sound. i play electric bass on this by the way (in addition to some noises and background vox).
thanks again for listening. i know it's not stevie ray vaughn or nu metal.

(not that there's anything wrong with either of those things)

It probably suffers most from having the drums limited in the soundscape.
The bass needs a little control to - I like the proggy top but the bottom is a bit too wide and making some mud for the gtr & drums to get caught in.
I often record to 4 track cassette & then upload into cakewalk for OD & mixing.
The biggest issue I think is that what sounds good in terms of instrument tone when jamming isn't necessarily good recording tone.
That said - with a full stereo drum image this would have been much, much better & more open. It sounds like you have the drummer in the dunny with the door open & the bass/guitar combo outside it & either side of the door.
Did you DI the gtrs & bass or mic the 4 track event in a room?
Nice proggy pieces with some potential. Good job so far.

awesome and insightful comments, rayc. yeah everything was open-miked and to add to that, the drums were recorded simulteneously with 2 SM57s (kick and snare) and one LDC hovering somewhere over the kit. there's not much that can be done about that now which is unfortunate because a good deal of drum detail gets lost. the "nice proggy top" probably consists of some of the noises and overdubs we did in ProTools which probably came out a little more crisp than the muddy murk of the original 4-track takes.
next time, i would like to really mic everything on the kit and have a pair of SDCs for the stereo image. however recording everything live in such close quarters, i still expect there will be considerable bleeding.
oh well. hopefully it's many flaws help give it a vibe.
anyways, thanks for listening.
