Went a bit ska-like during the recording, totally unintentionally. Recorded with a Boss BR-800, Roland GR-55 for the guitar effects, bass and brass emulation, and a Roland ready strat. I have better lyrics for another verse, but it's long enough already.

I love the feel of this. It's great. Love the energy. Really like the song.

Excellent vocal performance. Vocals sound great. But too much reverb. And whatever you doing with the stereo/delay/reverb/panned double tracks... Didn't care for that. I like the lead vocal entirely down the center.

Balance of levels is good. Except for the drums. They're way back. I'd go for a less "techno" drum sound and something that sounds more like an acoustic kit.

Bass sound is nice.

The brass sound was OK. If you listen close enough, once can tell it's fake. But, like I said, it's OK.

Guitars sound decent. I'd like a distorted part.

Again, I really liked this.

Not really a horn guy but those sound good to me, I'd never tell they weren't real (not that that's important).
Agree with Trip the drums could come forward.
Good track

I don't get ska, I get 80s rock, sounds like Traveling Wilburys with a little more horns and electricity. I really like the sound and the song. Great energy. It's a wonderful vibe.

Maybe re-think the vocals. To me, they are a little harsh and too forward. I want more dynamics in them, to allow for maybe some more emotion. They sound much better to me when there's a harmony happening. I would keep the big opening, but get spare and quiet on the first verse, bring the energy back for the chorus, and bring a new instrument and extra harmonies to give energy to the 2nd verse. At least once try a big delay effect on the phrase "Get it out." At 2:12, cut the horns and rhythm guitar, make space for the lead guitar lick.

Overall, though, it is a badass sound.

Thanks all. Some very useable suggestions there. I will have a play around. Ska was just a thought I had on listening to the result, it wasn't an aim or intention, and I may have just jumped to the wrong conclusion. No reggae choppy guitar in there at all. Those parping trumpets are also featured on 60s soul songs and Dexy's version of it (which I like a lot), and that may well have been what I was hearing in my head. Those parts were never part of the song when it was written for my little indie band 30 years ago (we never even practiced it let alone play it live). The horns just presented themselves when the track was evolving, and they took over!

I am trying to put highs and lows throughout songs now, rather than just all the instruments in there from start to finish. It's easy to fall in love with the overall sound, but you forget that it's the quiet parts that make the louder parts stand out. Working with the BR-800 you have some limitations along the way as you have to mix 6 tracks to one before you can add more, so it's easy to get locked in to something that later on you want to change. I'm a bit lazy, never aiming for absolute mixing perfection, and once it's done and fairly decent I tend to want to move on to the next one, rather than go back to square one.

Cheers.

Yup.

Yes.

It doesn't change much from the start to the end, so I'd mess with the volume during different sections, bringing it up and down a bit, like a wave. Chorus up a dB, the rest down a dB. Just a nudge.

Warren Zevon did stuff that moves like this.

Good suggestions on how to add variety, thanks. Never thought of adjusting the overall volume. What a nice simple idea to try out. LOVE Warren Zevon!
