All mics sound the same.
Hi there. I first got interested in home recording about 10 years ago. I got an M-Audio Delta 44 that came with Sonic Foundry Vegas Pro. I have been very happy with that. After changing computers a few times and Sony buying out Sonic Foundry, re-installing and re-registering the software became more and more of a hassle, and with no cash to upgrade, the hobby got set aside for a few years. I recently got it all out and setup again on a 3.0gHz Pentium 4 machine and am looking to pick it up again.
Aside from the breakout box and sound card, I really don't have any other equipment. I get a lot of high pitch hiss and line noise in my recordings. I think this is because I am using a PG58 mic direct in. I would get better quality if I went with an SM57 through a mic preamp, right?
I took some recording classes several years ago, but we never got to the point of learning how to use any of the rack equipment. I really need to get a good handle on how to operate the compressor properly.
The Vegas Pro software has been really good. But I think I really need to upgrade. I looked at some of the newer versions of Vegas and they seem to be dedicated video programs now. (My version feels like a good balance of audio software with video capability.) I've tried using Sound Forge just a little bit, it didn't seem quite as intuitive, but I could probably get the hang of it over time. I know there are many other programs out there now, all with their own benefits and drawbacks. Is there anyone who has experience with the old versions of Vegas Pro who could recommend a newer program?
Thanks and sorry for the long post. Any other recommendations would be great. I have been reading a lot on here and on tweakhedz. I'm not looking to put any professional recording studios out of business, I just want to be able to make decent sounding demos.

Try Reaper...its an uncrippled demo you can register for $40 if it works for you and is great for new comers and the more experienced...

I think your mic would be fine going into the delta..I think pops and crackles can be caused for all sorts of reasons, wrong buffer size, out of date drivers, recording too hot etc etc I dont think it will be caused because you arent using a dedicated pre amp imho

To my knowledge the Delta 44 doesnt have preamps, so YES, it would be alot better with a pre. You could pick up something used on Ebay for a few bucks.

oops there ya go lol

I have an Omni i/o Pre amp for the delta..I use it with a quattro...they have dmp2 pre amps and sound pretty good...you need the breakout cable but they were built to be the delta and quattros front end...

a DMP3 is prolly better quality but can cost around $150...I have two omnis I picked up for less than that
