OK, be gentle...

I am totally new to this whole midi thing, but I also realize the potential for it to nearly revolutionize my recording capabilities. So, with that in mind, I have two major questions:

1. I have a Korg 1600 DAW, and a BOSS BR-8. I do my major tracking on the Korg, but also wish to take advantage of some of the effect presets in the BR-8 (which I am more familiar with) for applying special effects to certain tracks (like the 20's radio sound effect to a guitar or drum track). Both have MIDI connections, and I am told that this is the way to get the info from one to trigger to another. Please explain...

2. When I purchased the Korg unit, I was also informed that the possibility existed whereby I could control a software/PC based DAW (like Cool Edit, or the Sonic Foundry stuff) using the MIDI connections between the Korg and my PC, with the Korg unit (like some of the outboard digital mixers with their PC counterparts. Is this really possible? If so how?

From my experience, most recorders (digital or analog) that have MIDI ports are for allowing you to synch up a MIDI sequencer that is either built in, or controls a MIDI device (like a drum machine, keyboard or module).

Was this any help for you?

You can use the Korg to send transport contol info (stop. play) and possibly volume info from the sliders if it sends that. You will need to consult your manual or people who are familliar with both pieces of gear/software for exact instructions.

You can use your boss as an effects processor. No midi is needed. Just use the aux outs on the korg and send the signal to the Boss. Send a 100% wet effects mix from the Boss back into an open channel on the Korg and mix the volume as needed.
