Top 40 drum sounds

Hey all.

I just happened across a top 40 pop type radio station this morning on the way to work, and I heard some drum sounds that intriguded me. It was electronic, kindof like, well, hehe, teenybopper candy mtv pop style. I was thinking of playing around with sounds like that with my own (most definitly not top 40) music.

So my question: how does one go about creating drum sounds like this? What are the different approaches and techniques used? I'm hoping that the answer is some sweet looping software I can pick up.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer! I'm a total noob to anything digital!

These days it is as simple as dragging a .wav file into your looping software, and choosing repeat. There is an endless resource of free sounds and loops on the internet. Perhaps someone else will post some useful links, but Google is a good start.
In the old days (early eighties) knowledge of the Roland TR-808 or Linndrum was like a Phd. Things sure have changed since Madonna first showed up.

Drums can be manipulated many different ways, as any instrument can be. You are only limited by you imagination, your skills and your $$$. Try getting some free drum samples (search the net) and just start messing with them. Change the EQ, double them up, triple them up, quadru... you get the point. There is no standard. Express yourself and have fun.

Loops are a good way to go for free, good quality drums. You can also buy drum sounds to use with midi from Sonic Implants and similar companies for $20-40. This offers more flexibility and can sound just as convincing with practice.
