is 9.4 of gain too much when your gain reduction is in between -3 and -6 threshold is -21 and your and your ratio is 5.5. i cant turn my speakers up as loud as i want to how do i post a mp3 on here anyway

Punctuation dude....punctuation. That was like 5 questions in one sentence.

the gain on a compressor is called the "makeup gain". This is so you can makeup the lost volume that you've compressed. so usually you want to get the level back up to where it was before you compressed. all depends on how it sounds though.

lightningmp3.com to upload an MP3 and get a link to post.

You can put an mp3 on yousendit.com and paste the link here. It only stays up for a week but you don't have to register for anything, and that's plenty of time for people to get a listen of what you're doing.

thank you i've been trying to figure out how to do it all day

*sigh*

THERE ARE NO RULES IN MUSIC. There is no such thing at "too much" anything. Is your signal audibly squished? Do you want it to be? Is your signal too dynamic, too quiet in places and too loud in others? Do you want it to be? Does it sound good to you? If it does, then great. Keep doing what you are dong and work on improvement. If it does not, tell us specifically what sound you want, specifically what sound you have, and ask us how to turn what you have into what you want.

Do you have any idea what you want?

What you are doing with questions like the one posted here is essentially throwing random numbers at us and asking it it's right. Those numbers represent a function that when applied to sound is completely subjective. It is just like asking us "is this too red?" (do you see anything?....I don't see anything...)

I suggest, in all honesty, and as friendly as possible, that you do whatever you have to do to get real. Not being able to turn your monitors up as loud as you want is no excuse to ask us incoherent questions. Neither is not knowing how to use your gear. If you need to mix at a different time of day (or night) so you CAN turn up, do what you have to do in order to make that happen. Experiment and learn. Remove the excuses and get to work!

Yes sir Mr Zed. Lol. It does sound squished when I have the gain up at 9.4 but it isn't peeking. Any suggestions?

I apologize to everybody in here for asking an obviously a vague question. If you don't know its a vague question you wouldn't think anything is wrong with it. I thought maybe if I gave you my problem you would be able to help me. Sorta like a 28+14 equals 42 but I was coming up with 32 because I forgot to carry. It's obviously not that simple. lol
