i really didnt want to start a new thread about a topic this small, but i was just wondering if you can effectively mic toms with sm57s or will it sound terrible?

(drums are tuned and sound great)

"Can you?" I dunno. What I do know is we used a SM57 on a snare, last summer, for both recording and live sound, and it worked just fine. Now, no doubt some wise ass will come on here and say I am crazy and I don't know what I am talking about (there are one or two folks who seem to say that about everything I say, even if they were no where near me when I did something I am reporting on,) but I was there, we did it, and it worked. I'd say it would transfer to toms.

i have other mics that i'd go to first, but i would have no problem putting 57s on toms, Especially if the toms are tuned/sound good.

you know the best answer though.......try it :)

Almost everyone uses a 57 on snare. The fact you think anyone would say you're crazy to do something that's been done a billion times shows how paranoid you are. Gee, I wonder why your blood pressure is so high that you pass out. :laughings: Relax, man. You're too high-strung and wound up. :D

There are a million sound engineers out there using SM57's on toms, it is almost a standard in the live sound industry.

SM57's sound good on Snare, Toms, Kick (if you don't have a kick mic), congas, bongos, guitar cabs, bass cabs, live vocal, sax, trumpet, trombone, etc etc, while they are not always the best choice for all off these things they do a reasonable job.

alan.

They are also good for high spl and handle high pressure durably. I farted in one without a windscreen (underwear serve this purpose just as well) and it captured it so well you could almost smell it. Not a hint of sibilance.

What Greg said. I think they make a better rack tom mic though (personally).

But there isn't anything you couldn't use a 57 for that's why so many people recommend them as a first mic.

As I said...

QED.

...no doubt some wise ass will come on here and say I am crazy...

And then you come along and prove me right. Ahhh, it's like saying the sun will rise in the east- so predictable. Then, to try to lend some level of credence to your predictable behavior, you say I am getting up tight about the whole thing. Nothing in my post suggest any such thing, but you take the Newt Gingrich approach- he said that if you repeat a falsehood often, loud and long enough, it assumes the patina of truth. The truth is, I am not getting worked up about your less-than-half-baked opinions, even now. You are no more than a gnat biting my ass- and I just sat on you.:laughings:

If I comment of a thread like this one, I do so from my own experience- I know it is "right" or works because I have done it, and I usually relate one such experience, so the OP will know where I am coming from. "Knowing" something because it's "been done a billion times" is not knowing it at all, it's just repeating conventional wisdom.

"Now, no doubt some wise ass will come on here and say I am crazy and I don't know what I am talking about"

just seems like a hell of a lot of baggage man.......

definitely some chilling out required.

"and I just sat on you." ...................................Ouch! * :D *
